Velikovsky - "Water On the Moon" 3/7(The Bonds of the Past)

Immanuel Velikovsky - The Bonds of the Past(Documentary) Velikovsky proposed in his 1950's book "Worlds in Collision" that many myths and traditions of ancient peoples and cultures are based on actual events. Worldwide global catastrophes of a celestial origin, which had a profound effect on the lives, beliefs and writings of early mankind. This is a documentary about Immanuel Velikovsky's discoveries by Henry Zemel. First telecast on February 22, 1972 by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Immanuel Velikovsky (June 10, 1895 (NS) November 17, 1979) is best known as the author of a number of controversial books on pre-history, particularly the US bestseller Worlds in Collision (1950). Earlier in his life, he played a role in the founding of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and was a respected psychiatrist/psychoanalyst. His books primarily used comparative mythology and ancient literary sources (not least the Bible) to propose that the Earth had suffered catastrophic close-contacts with other planets in the solar system (principally Venus and Mars), during and before recorded history. He argued that electromagnetic effects played an important role in celestial mechanics. He also proposed a revised chronology of Ancient Egypt, Greece, the Land of Israel and the Near East, aiming to eliminate Dark Ages and reconcile Biblical history with both archeology and Egyptian chronology. Generally, Velikovsky's theories have been vigorously rejected by the academic community ...

A twisted soul is killing young African-American professionals in Baltimore and reporter Darryl Billups returns to his investigative background to cover the story and in the process he unwittingly places himself within the killer's deadly orbit. (approximate length: 6 hours, 4 cassettes)

Hidden in Plain View RelateItems

Hidden in Plain View Specifications

Darryl Billups calls Baltimore "the world's biggest country town," and he's drawn to it like a magnet. He gained sensational success as a crime reporter for the (fictional) Baltimore Herald, where he exposed the neo-Nazi who tried to blow up the NAACP headquarters, an event chronicled in Up Jumped the Devil. Following this stint, Billups tried his luck as a reporter in New York. But the offer of a management job at the Herald and a ,000 raise has brought him back to Baltimore, where he remains the hottest thing to hit that town since the Homicide television series.

Darryl's hopes for a quiet life are disturbed when someone begins killing people--all young, all African American, all upwardly mobile--and decorating their faces with decals of the Confederate flag. The tough old police detective who worked with him on the NAACP bombing case lets Darryl break the story to the country. Meanwhile, the killer--(who incidentally gets turned on by Jerry Springer)--gradually emerges from the shadows complete with a catalog of frightening surprises. The author knows his Baltimore, and he knows the inner-workings of a journalist's mind. He makes Darryl a most human and very interesting kind of hero. --Dick Adler

HIDDEN IN PLAIN VIEW is an engrossing mystery set in Baltimore, Maryland.
Someone is killing a seemingly unrelated set of African-American professionals
in their late thirties. Each victim is found in the bathtub of his/her home
with a decal of the confederate flag attached to the center of his/her
forehead. The police are stumped and seem at a loss when it comes to solving
a case which reveals no clear cause of death. Homicide detective Phillip
Gardner seeks assistance from former reporter turned editor, Darryl Billups,
who worked with him in the past on a case that won them national attention.
Darryl attacks the scene with a reporter's curiosity and intuition which has
him quickly stumbling into the killer's path. It is not long before he
earns himself a place on the killer's hit list.

Blair Walker has written a fast-paced thriller that draws you in from word
one. He gets into the minds of his characters in a way that displays the
strengths and vulnerabilities of each. His style has you empathizing not only
with Darryl and the victims, but the killer as well. Walker switches deftly
between street vernacular and proper English seamlessly throughout scenes and
dialogue. The characters are amusing, endearing and downright frustrating at
times. HIDDEN IN PLAIN VIEW is a satisfying and encompassing read that is
sure to please mystery lovers.

How to Become a Best Selling Author

If you're planning on writing nonfiction, then the first question you have to ask is whether or not you think yourself capable of embarking on this trying yet rewarding journey. With general non-fiction, there will always be space for a good new non-fiction book in the market. So, what makes a non-fiction book a best seller? Firstly, your book should be able to attract a considerable amount of readers; it has to be something that is new and interesting, preferably a topic that no one else has broached. Or, if you're writing on a topic that isn't new, then you should come up something that's new and interesting to contribute to the whole concept.

So, why write non-fiction? Having your own non-fiction book published still holds a certain distinction and people generally associate a book author as someone who is an expert on the subject. If used the right way, your book can act as a helpful PR tool. But, don't ever make the mistake of thinking that you can retire to the Caribbean's on the proceeds of its sales.

Here are a few tips on how to become a best selling author:

o Choose a good title for your book - The title is one of the most important aspects for marketing your book. With non-fiction books, like every other form of marketing communication, the title of the book has to suggest some kind of benefit to its readers. It's the title that draws everyone's attention to the book, whether it is placed in a bookstore or whether it is available online. So, make sure you come up with something that's catchy and interesting. Sub-headings are also very fashionable and work quite well.

o Writing your own book - If writing your first book seems like a daunting prospect, then you should probably approach this task in a methodical manner. Don't think of your book as a tough project. Think of it as a fun activity. As you start working through the book, you will get a stronger sense of achievement, as the completion of each chapter will seem like you've overcome a major milestone.

o Planning the book - While planning the outline of the book, never rush it. Carry a notepad around with you so that you can jot down little ideas and other forms of inspiration. With non-fiction, it always helps to work to a closely defined structure. Spend time planning the chapters and make sure they all run in the right order. If you need research material, you must first assemble it and then file it under each chapter.

o Write it up - Now that all your work is done, you need to take the plunge and get started. Since you have mapped out the subject matter carefully, you'll find it easier to start writing. Your job comes down to linking and smoothing out the plot, rather than having to think of what the next chapter will contain. Once you've finished your final chapter, take some time off from the writing project. Go through your work and make the necessary changes.

In reality, most publishers don't really do a good job of marketing books. This can be really annoying when you consider that they take the lion's share of the proceeds from the sales. So, you have two choices for effective marketing of your book:

o Hire a good publicist - This is quite a popular option amongst the famous public speakers and business gurus who don't have the time but have the money to get the job done.

o DIY - Do it yourself! You can market your book without really spending a lot of money.

So, whether you're writing career books or you are writing memoirs, these few marketing and writing techniques should go a long way in helping your writing career get kick started. So, if it's a bestseller status that you're looking out for, remember that it isn't too hard to get. With the right methods and the right style of writing, your first no-fiction book should be a blooming success. The New York Bestseller List couldn't ask for more!

The Host by Stephenie Meyer

Author of the Twilight series, pushed her romantic skill into an adult book of science fiction, with equal parts romance and action, Stephenie Meyer has once again shown her flawless skill at writing and produced a book that is sure to be a classic.

The world in "The Host" is that of an Earth that has been invaded by a parasite-like race of aliens who take over human brains and bodies, eliminate cancer and war, and turn the planet into a sort of paradise. But, humans, like Melanie Stryder, want the earth back under their control and refuse to give in to the control of the invading aliens. When Malanie is taken over by Wanderer, one of the alien parasites, she uses what little power she has to pour thoughts of her loved one into Wanderer's mind and convince her to find Melanie's brother and boyfriend.

It is not what most would consider hard-core sci-fi. Meyer focuses more on the relationships of the characters and the intriguing dilemma of two lives sharing one body. Much of the book deals with Melanie and Wanda's complicated love triangle with Melanie's old flame and Wanda's new love interest. There is action and suspense laced throughout, and Wanda's relationship with the surviving humans is tension filled to the max. The novel's real strength lies in the character of Wanda as she is constantly pulled between her duty as a Soul and the compassion she develops from her connection with Melanie and the other humans.

Health, Family & Lifestyle Books

Beauty and Fashion
When it comes to beauty and fashion, helpful books abound. Books such as James Wong's book entitled 'Grow Your Own Drugs: Easy Recipes for Natural Remedies and Beauty Treats'. James Wong has a MSc in Ethnobotany from the University of Kent so he knows his subject. Basically, the book covers all the various natural remedies that you can grow and distill in your own garden to use as complementary therapies and to produce many natural beauty products. It is certainly an interesting book and pops a lot of questions into your mind - read it to find out what I mean!

Complementary Medicine
James Wong's book naturally drifts over into the sector on complementary medicine and, I would reiterate - this book is certainly worthy of more than a cursory glance. Another interesting and useful book on complementary medicine is Louisa L. Hay's book 'You Can Heal Your Life', a book that has been a bestseller for a number of years. Apart from the interesting and useful information contained within the pages of her book, you will find exquisite illustrations by Joan Perrin Falquet on each page. Apart from highly recommending this book, I would suggest you read this book in conjunction with Rhonda Byrne's 'The Secret' - each book complements the other and offers very closely similar messages.

Diet and Nutrition
There have probably been more books written on dieting than practically any other subject - fad diets, celebrity diets, dietitian-recommended diets: in fact, you name it and it has probably been written about. Then we have the Harcombe Diet and the Holcombe Diet - and, of course, Paul McKenna 'I Can Make You Thin' which comes complete with a CD as well. The book by Zoe Harcombe 'The Harcombe Diet - Stop Counting Calories and Start Losing Weight' is actually a book based on very sound nutritional principles. The concept behind this book is easy to follow and makes sensible nutritional sense.

With regards to the Holcombe Diet, that is more of a lifestyle nutritional book that advises on cooking in a nutritional way. Holcombe's book is entitled 'How to Feed Your Whole Family a Healthy Balanced Diet, with Very Little Money and Hardly Any Time, Even if You Have a Tiny Kitchen, Only Three Saucepans (one with an ill-fitting lid) and no fancy gadgets - unless you count the garlic crusher'. The title is a bit of a mouthful (sorry about the pun!) but it does reflect the fun nature contained within the book. This is sound nutritional information, presented in a light-hearted, fun way that gets the message of healthy eating for the whole family across.

Family and Parents
Continuing with the theme of healthy eating for the family, Annabel Karmel has written a book about meal planning for the baby and toddler that continues to be a bestseller on the nutrition of babies and toddlers. The 'Essential Guide to Feeding Babies and Young Children' was first published in 1991 and hasn't been out of print since. Annabel Karmel has now published the 'New Complete Baby and Toddler Meal Planner' which features home-cooked meals based on fresh, natural ingredients and integrates menu charts to make it easy to plan your shopping trips in advance.

Fitness and Exercise
Moving away from the theme of nutrition and dietetics, the fitness and exercise section features a pretty diverse collection of books from 'Strength Training Anatomy' by Frederic Delavier to 'The Anatomy of Stretching' by Brad Walker. A book that I have found in the Fitness and Exercise section is 'Born to Run: the Hidden Tribe, the Ultra-Runners, and the Greatest Race the World has Never Seen: The Rise of Ultra-Running and the Super-Athlete Tribe'. This title is another mouthful, this time written by Christopher McDougall. It is a tale of endurance, of adventure - with that odd quirk that makes an ordinary book special. It should be way up there with the best sellers. Basically, it's a story of Christopher McDougall running across the planet where no man should have gone before - but, there is much, much more to this book - and I am not about to spoil it for you by telling you any more about it. Read it for yourself - you will be very glad you did!

Men's Health and Lifestyle
One book I would encourage every man and his partner to read is the book by Professor Jane Plant: 'Prostate Cancer: Understand, Prevent and Overcome Prostate Cancer'. Many men are only vaguely aware of their prostate until it starts causing problems with the 'waterworks'. However, what men need to be made aware of is that prostate cancer really can be the silent killer - unless it is caught early enough. Prostate cancer rarely gives any obvious symptoms until it is too late but, if you are fortunate enough for it to be caught early enough, prostate cancer is completely curable.

At present there are no routine tests to check for prostate cancer as the only real indication is the Prostate Specific Antigen in the blood. In a man of around 50 years old, his PSA level should never be above 3 - and, if it is above that level, he needs to see his doctor. Get it checked out - it may be nothing but, if this indicator gives you an idea that all may not be well, at least you have been given a chance of treatment before it's too late. If there is one book out of the whole of our book-site that I would recommend, it would be this one - it could save your life!

Successful Methods For Selling Your Book Online at Amazon

So you want to promote your new book. Would you believe I can help you take one giant leap in that direction with one simple word? That word is Amazon.com. Yep, it's the internet behemoth that dwarfs most other such companies. And I'm going to offer you ten quick, fairly easy ways to promote your book on Amazon.

1) First, if you aren't registered on Amazon, do so---then set up your profile. You can place your photo, your interests, your background, and, of course, your book title and an attractive, concise description of the book. You're off to a great start.

2) I'm assuming that your publisher has placed your book for sale on the site. Nowadays, even most self-publishers or print-on-demand publishers include this in their sales package. Most publishers also include the book detail page. This tells readers the book price, number of pages, publisher name, book summary, and reviews/endorsements if you've received any. However, ask your publisher to also include the Search Inside option. This allows interested parties to check your back cover, your table of contents, etc. If your publisher doesn't do this, you will have to mail Amazon a copy of your book so they can copy some pages out of it for the Search Inside option.

3) Amazon has a feature called Listmania. This offers individuals like yourself the opportunity to put together a list of some of your favorite books on different subjects or genres. For example, you might make a list of some of your favorite novels. If your own book is a novel, you would want to place your book somewhere on the list. That way, when readers read through your list, they will see your title and maybe order a copy. How's that for crass self-promotion?

4) Fill out some So You'd Like to...Guides. On your profile page you'll see a place to do this. On Amazon, people write brief articles like: So You'd Like To Be More Popular or So You'd Like to Learn How to do Plumbing or whatever. If your book is about becoming more popular, you'll write a short article about popularity, including your book title and some other book titles about the same subject. When interested parties see your So You'd Like To... page, they'll click on it and read it. Then there's a fairly good chance they may click on your book title. Then, wonder of wonders, they may even buy your book so they can learn how to be more popular! Cool, huh?

5) You will get a lot more attention and action on Amazon if you review books. You can write a review for any book. One hundred book reviews seems to be a magic number for grabbing significant attention on the site. Don't be overwhelmed by that number. Just set a goal of, say, reviewing 5-10 books per week and you'll soon reach the 100 mark.

6) Again, this may seem like embarrassing self-promotion, but you might want to ask friends and relatives to write a positive review about your book and give it a five-star rating. You should probably just ask them to write a review of your book on Amazon but, hopefully, it will be understood that you expect a good review and a decent star rating.

7) There is a wiki or dynamic book encyclopedia on Amazon too. The Amazon people call it Amapedia. You can use this to describe your book. Remember, this is not a review where you express opinions---just the facts, maam (or sir). It's a dictionary-type description of your book and its contents. This is another way to get your book out there for people to see.

8) Amazon also has a blog and here you can say almost anything about your book or what you've been reading. Just make sure it's in good taste and doesn't contain inappropriate language. Maybe you'll pick up some bloggers who are interested in what you write.

9) A major objective of your profile, your book reviews, your listmania lists, your blogging is to build a reputation as an expert in some area or areas. Once people begin to see you as an expert, they're more likely to buy your book. Don't expect to be tagged an expert within a few weeks. It will likely take some hard work and some time, but it's worth it in the end.

10) The last suggestion can really result in some sales but you've got to shell out some fairly serious money. It's called BXGY. What it does is pair your book with a top selling book. Customers are told, "If you buy this popular book, you should also consider buying this one too" (your book). The catch is that pairing your book with a winner costs $1000 per month. If you've got the extra money and believe your book has enough merit to sell well with a companion book, then try it out for a month. Who knows? You may earn more than the $1000 in royalties on your book sales. (Remember that you won't see this royalty money until your publisher pays you for that quarter).

So dive into the Amazon site and begin learning the ropes. It will take some time to navigate the site and find the various opportunities described above, but it will be worth your time. I wish you the best in selling your book. It may not be a New York Times bestseller, but if you can sell a fair number of copies you can be proud as an author and gain some financial profit along the way. I wish you the best.

Weis fights the beast within him from claiming her the way nature beckons him to. He must ease her into his life, but the offer that is placed in front of him is too much to resist. He must win her trust and fight off those that would take her from him. After centuries of waiting, there is nothing that can stop him form having what he has claimed.

This is the second installment of the "Dark Vampire Series" by Jade Cooper.

This book is considered erotica writing. The author uses language and situations that some people may find offensive.

Choosing a Book Club

When you look into choosing an appropriate book club for the first time to join the task can be somewhat confusing. This is especially a hard task when you are looking for bestsellers or general interest books. The questions that occur when choosing one is which club is the right one for you?

Does it matter or should I just pick one? Through this article you may be able to answer these questions and choose one.

The three biggest general and bestseller book clubs include: The Literary Guild and Book-of-The-Month Club, Doubleday Club. The book clubs are actually all part of the same company under Bookspan. Bookspan operates and owns over 40 in the United States with over 8 million members. The different clubs that are in this article are a part of the 8 million.

The Doubleday and The Literary Guild is more for widely popular fiction and furnished titles. The large selection is especially true for women's literature and romantic books. This is their specialty. They also carry a lot of thrillers and mysteries. If you are into science fiction the two book clubs just mentioned are not for you. A great web site that is known for books is Amazon and you can actually find good deals through Amazon coupons.

A great point in joining a club comes with the deals and coupons you can get. The Literary Guild has a deal for 5 books for a dollar. Also they offer such things as free gifts. So try out different book clubs to see which one fits you.

It is very difficult to recommend only on club due to every book club having their own strengths and weaknesses. So take a look at different sites and see if they offer what you are looking for. Whether you enjoy romance novels, non-fiction, science fiction, or biographies there is a club out there for you.

PREFACE.
Giacomo Leopardi is a great name in Italy among philosophers and poets, but is quite unknown in this country, and Mr. Townsend has the honor of introducing him, in the most captivating way, to his countrymen. In Germany and France he has excited attention. Translations have been made of his works; essays have been written on his ideas. But in England his name is all but unheard of. Six or seven years ago Mr. Charles Edwards published a translation of the essays and dialogues, but no version of the poems has appeared, so far as I know. Leopardi was substantially a poet,—that is to say, he had imagination, sentiment, passion, an intense love of beauty, a powerful impulse towards things ideal. The sad tone of his speculations about the universe and human destiny gave an impression of mournfulness to his lines, but this rather deepened the pathos of his work. In the same breath he sang of love and the grave, and the love was the more eager for its brevity. He had the poetic temperament—sensitive, ardent, aspiring. He possessed the poetic aspect—the broad white brow, the large blue eyes. Some compared him to Byron, but the resemblance was external merely. In ideas, purpose, feeling, he was entirely unlike the Englishman; in the energy and fire of his style only did he somewhat resemble him. Worshippers have even ventured to class him with Dante, a comparison which shows, at least, in what estimation the poet could be held at home, and how largely the patriotic sentiment entered into the conception of poetical compositions, how necessary it was that the singer should be a bard. His verses ranged over a large field. They were philosophic, patriotic, amorous. There are odes, lyrics, satires, songs; many very beautiful and feeling; all noble and earnest. His three poems, “All' Italia,” “Sopra il Monumento di Dante,” “A Angelo Mai,” gave him a national reputation. They touch the chords to which he always responded—patriotism, poetry, learning, a national idealism bearing aloft an enormous weight of erudition and thought.

Leopardi was born at Recanati, a small town about fifteen miles from Ancona, in 1798. He was of noble parentage, though not rich. His early disposition was joyous, but with the feverish joy of a highly-strung, nervous organization. He was a great student from boyhood; and severe application undermined a system that was never robust, and that soon became hopelessly diseased. Illness, accompanied with sharp pain, clipped the wings of his ambition, obliged him to forego preferment, and deepened the hopelessness that hung over his expectations. His hunger for love could not be satisfied, for his physical infirmity rendered a union undesirable, even if possible, while a craving ideality soon transcended any visible object of affection. He had warm friends of his own sex, one of whom, Antonio Ranieri, stayed by him in all vicissitudes, took him to Naples, and closed his eyes, June 14, 1837.

To this acute sensibility of frame must be added the torture of the heart arising from a difference with his father, who, as a Catholic, was disturbed by the skeptical tendencies of his son, and the perpetual irritation of a conflict with the large majority of even philosophical minds. An early death might have been anticipated. No amount of hopefulness, of zest for life, of thirst for opportunity, of genius for intellectual productiveness will counteract such predisposition to decay. The death of the body, however, has but ensured a speedier immortality of the soul; for many a thinker has since been busy in gathering up the fragments of his mind and keeping his memory fresh. His immense learning has been forgotten. His archæological knowledge, which fascinated Niebuhr, is of small account to-day. But his speculative and poetical genius is a permanent illumination. ...

From Passion Into Profits - A Book Review

We all know that as a team we can do more if those working with this are as passionate as we are. But what happens when you take that level of strength and inner will in an organization and allow it to flourish amongst all the employees? Perhaps, you can turn that into potentially unlimited profits. If this sounds like something you'd like to do in your company, there's a very good book I'd like you to read. The name of the book is;

"The Passionate Organization - Igniting the Fire of Employee Commitment" by James R. Lucas, ANACOM book publishers, New York, NY, 1999, (235 pp); ISBN: 0-8144-0477-4.

So what is Passion anyway? I'm glad you asked because that is the good title of the first chapter in this book, and rightfully so. If you'll recall in a recent interview with Bill Gates and Warren Buffett at the Columbia school of business each of these gentlemen told the graduating MBA students to find something that they were passionate about and not to just chase down the money. They suggested that if you are passionate about what you do and you provide perseverance to it, the profit will be there.

This author suggests you should never underestimate the power of passion, or the destruction of negative passion, or the problem with apathy; or the absence of passion. But how you bring about passion into an organization? The author defines this too and brings forth a number of strategies in part one of this book. Then in part two he explains how to find a passionate people within your organization, and how to recruit more. Lucas then explains how to allow the motion to flourish through the organization.

Lastly, he explains how to build the team using the strength of the inner drive that has been created and how that can rub off on the stakeholders, and the customers to create brand loyalists. Indeed, he also explains how easy it is to lose this edge, and how to get it back when you do. If you run any size company, I recommend this book to you, and to your top employees, managers, and executives. The author obviously knows what he's talking about, and I concur with much of what he said.

Therefore, this book is in my personal business research Library, and it has been there for nearly 10 years. Why not pick up a copy, read it, and think about exactly what he is saying, because some of the richest folks in the world right now are repeating much of his words of wisdom today. Please consider this.

Most Haunted House in America - Harrow - Douglas Clegg

Among the many ruins of the Hudson Valley of New York, is the mansion known as Harrow, built by the occultist Justin Gravesend in the late 19th century. It has a reputation for hauntings primarily from its fairly violent history and the fact that Gravesend enjoyed a reputation as a spiritualist and student of the occult. Isis Claviger, his mistress, who had also been an associate of Aleister Crowley, is reported to have intentionally allowed herself to be murdered -- in a ritual conducted by Gravesend -- in Harrow itself. Harrow, it's said, has had millions of ghostly visitations, perhaps as many as ten million. The spectral evidence is there, at the house itself. It is a house of ancient sorcery and terrible crime. Do you believe in ghosts? Want to know the story behind ghosts and hauntings? Harrow is a sprawling estate in the Hudson Valley, outside of the town of Watch Point. It was built before 1900, and the man who built it was an associate of Aleister Crowley. Isis Claviger, the notorious psychic, wrote a book, The Infinite Ones, about the various manifestations at Harrow. It is rumored that she is buried in the walls of the house. Read the books of Harrow, including Nightmare House, Mischief, The Infinite, and The Abandoned. But be forewarned: the spirits of the dead reach out to the living with hunger. How to Screen For an Eating Disorder With 5 Simple Questions (The SCOFF Test)

How can you tell if you or a friend might have an eating disorder? British researchers have devised a simple five-question test, which indicates if you have a problem. Simply answer yes, or no to these questions:

1. Do you make yourself Sick because you feel uncomfortably full?

2. Do you worry you have lost Control over how much you eat?

3. Have you recently lost Over fourteen pounds in a 3 month period?*

4. Do you believe yourself to be Fat when others say you are too thin?

5. Would you say that Food dominates your life?

This simple five-question test is known as the SCOFF questionnaire. Each of these letter represents one of five key questions: Sick, Control, Over*, Fat, and Food. Note the original "O" represented the British weight measurement, one-stone, which is equivalent to 14 pounds. The original question was, "Have you recently lost more than One stone in a 3 month period?, which I translated to "Over 14 pounds."

The SCOFF screening tool was developed by researchers at St. George's Hospital Medical School in London and the link to the free full text of this study is below in the Links and Resources section (Morgan et al).

If you answered "yes" to any two or more of these questions indicates that you likely have an eating disorder. Eating disorders are complex and life-threatening. Early detection helps you get better, sooner, and with fewer complications.

Fictional Feminism: How American Bestsellers Affect the Movement for Women's Equality Overviews

This book focuses on the ways in which second-wave feminism has been represented in American popular culture, and on the effects that these representations have had on feminism as a political movement. Kim Loudermilk provides close readings of four best-selling novels and their film adaptations. According to Loudermilk, each of these novels contains explicitly feminist characters and themes, yet each presents a curiously ambivalent picture of feminism; these texts at once take feminism seriously and subtly undercut its most central tenets. This book argues that these texts create a kind of "fictional feminism" that recuperates feminism's radical potential, thereby lessening the threat it presents to the status quo.

Edith Wharton's 'The House of Mirth' - 100 Years Later

"Selden paused in surprise. In the afternoon rush of the Grand Central Station, his eyes had been refreshed by the sight of Miss Lily Bart." With these words Edith Wharton begins Lily and Selden's tale of woe. Since 1905, the year of publication of The House of Mirth, this tale has been the true depiction of the plight of the 19th century American women: branded a lesser gender, financially dependent, and socially victimized.

How things have changed in one hundred years!

Betty Friedan's Feminine Mystique started it all with her clarion call to identify "the problem that had no name." The problem still has no name, but the solution does: a feminism that labors for more equality and more representation. This is nothing new; one can recall Chaucer's moral satire "Wife of Bath." In that tale, the Queen commutes a knight's death penalty if he can find out (in one year) what "women want the most?" As it turns out the Queen is satisfied with the answer: "a woman wants sovereignty over her husband.

Of course that turns out to be extreme, for sovereignty means absolute power over a husband. The problem for Lily Bart is that -despite her intelligence, pedigree, and fine looks-she can't find an acceptable suitor. And when on the throes of desperation she decides to accept the repugnant (to her) but wealthy Rosedale, he rebuffs her. Irony thy name is woman!

Today we no longer find Lily Barts, but strong professional competent women such as Supreme Court Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor and Secretary of State Hilary Clinton. But in 1905 women's education was geared to keep them in continuous subservience. Her limited education allowed her limited possibilities for independence. Practical skills she had none. And when she attempts to make a living in an embroidery shop, she finds that she can't; her efforts becoming the object of gossip and humiliation:

Lily had taken up her work early in January; it was now two months later, and she was still being rebuked for her inability to sew spangles on a hat-frame. As she returned to her work she heard a titter pass down the tables. She knew she was an object of criticism and amusement to the other workwomen.Lawrence Selden --the weak hero- who misleads Lily into thinking that he could be her salvation, is a reprehensible character who never lifted a finger to help her. In the end, with no one to turn to, she overdoses with sleeping pills. She dies in a dingy furnished room: "There was no token of her personality about the room, unless it showed itself in the scrupulous neatness of the scan articles of furniture: a washing-stand, two chairs, a small writing-desk, and the little table near the bed."

In Ecclesiastes 7,4 we read: "The heart of the wise is the in house of mourning, but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth." Who are the wise and who are the fools in this novel? While Lily Bart may be thought to be a fool, her seriousness and attitude towards a moral life proves her to be wiser than the rest of the cast of characters.

A New Look at Osteoporosis - What Do You Know?

8 million American women and 2 million American men are estimated to have osteoporosis and osteoporosis-related fractures in 2005 were responsible for an estimated $19 billion in costs (National Osteoporosis Foundation). So, it would be wise to understand more about osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a disease in which bones become fragile and more likely to break. Such breaks are generally in the hips, spine, ribs or wrists.

The current theory on the cause of osteoporosis is that heredity, hormones, exercise and diet play major roles in this causing this disease. However, the diet focus is on deficiencies, not consuming enough calcium and Vitamin D. This ignores something even more important in your diet! (Bone Health and Osteoporosis: A Report of the Surgeon General, Chap. 2)

Osteoporosis can result from not getting enough calcium and Vitamin D in your diet. However, it can also result from eating too many sweets even if you do get sufficient calcium in your diet because sugar consumption lowers the amount of calcium in your blood. To maintain the correct amount of calcium in your blood, your body pulls calcium from your bones and teeth!

Do you know the two major functions of bone? The first one is obvious-it supports the muscles and organs of the body. Without the skeleton, we would all be jellyfish. The second, however, is not so obvious. It acts as a storehouse for two minerals: calcium and phosphorus. Most people are not aware that their bones are continuously dissolved and built up. Your skeleton's cells are completely replaced every ten years by these two actions. This process is called remodeling. Osteoporosis is the result of bones dissolving, without being built up. They are dissolved from the inside, so they appear to be strong until they break.

When there is a sudden need for more calcium in the blood, special bone cells (osteoclasts) that dissolve bone go to work to make the calcium available. What causes the body to withdraw calcium from the bones (and teeth)? A major one is eating foods containing refined sugar. (Degeneration - Regeneration, Melvin Page, DDS) (By the way, Dr. Page also points out that sugar consumption throws the blood chemistry out of balance causing calcium deposits (arthritis) in the soft tissues of the body, such as joints.) Given the increase in sugar and high fructose corn syrup consumption in the last 50 years, is it any wonder that we see osteoporosis increasing?

How to Find a Literary Agent - Literary Agent Directories

Finding a literary agent can be as difficult as actually writing a manuscript, especially if you're unfamiliar with the business of publishing. That said, an agent can help you find an appropriate publishing house and negotiate a fair deal. With so many agents out there, however, the process of searching for one can be overwhelming. Here are some literary agent directories which I have found useful because they're easy to use and comprehensive. All helped me connect with my two literary agents, who represented my fiction and non-fiction works.

Association Of Authors' Representatives

Agents who are AAR members have to adhere to certain ethical guidelines, such as not asking clients for a fee. They are also expected to regularly make book sales in order to retain their membership. That said, when you sign with an agent who belongs to the AAR, you can be assured that the person has experience in the business and will represent you fairly. Of course, there are plenty of qualified agents who aren't AAR members, but looking through this directory is a great place to begin your search.

Agent Query

Agent Query is one of my favorite directories because it's so easy to use. You simply type in which genre you write, and it will then present you with a lengthy list of agents who represent that type of work. In addition, Agent Query provides many details for each agent, including where he or she went to school, which books he or she has recently sold, and whether or not e-mail queries are accepted from that person.

Preditors And Editors

Preditors And Editors has one of the largest lists of literary agents and lets authors know which ones are reputable and which ones have a reputation for scamming clients. The directory is frequently updated to note which agents are worth seeking out. Authors write in and share their experiences, which keeps it accurate and current.

UltraSimple Diet - Review and Book Information

The UltraSimple Diet is a diet book written by Mark Hyman, M.D. It was published in March of 2007. The author has also written a New York Times bestseller titled "UltraMetabolism." The UltraSimple Diet is a simple but accelerated 7-day weight loss plan for losing weight safely and quickly. The primary attraction of this diet is the possibility of losing up to 10 pounds in 7 days.

The diet entails detailed instructions which leaves no guesswork for the reader. Each day is planned out with instructions on exactly what to eat and what exercise routines to perform. Exercising is also optional on this diet which may be great news for those who hate to exercise. However, if you don't mind the exercise, the routines are suitable for those on a tight schedule.

The diet's goal is for readers to achieve permanent weight loss and deals with what the author feels is the basis of disease and obesity which are toxicity and inflammation. Within the first week of the diet, users will be eliminating toxins such as alcohol, fast food, trans fats, etc. The diet promotes eating whole foods which do not lead to inflammation or toxicity.

The average rating on Amazon's description page is a 4 1/2 out of 5 stars. Many reviewers of the book favor the simplicity of the diet, however, there were some complaints about the types of food that are eaten on the diet.

Overall, the UltraSimple Diet has received positive feedback and may work well for those who like step-by-step instructions on what to eat and what to do to lose weight.
