Summer at the Lake (Bookcassette(r) Edition) Overviews

For childhood friends Leo Kelly, Jane Devlin, and newly ordained "Packy" Keenan, the summers they spent at the lake together were times of pure magic. And no summer was more enchanting than the summer of 1948 - until a tragic car wreck killed two of their friends.

The rich and prominent "Old House" families of Chicago banded together to protect their own - the driver, who was drunk, was the son of a local doctor. There was a cover-up and a vicious scandal. Leo left for the Korean War, and the three friends' summers at the lake were gone forever. . .

Until thirty years later when Leo, still obsessed by the memory of Jane and the need to solve the mystery of what really happened that fateful summer, comes back to Chicago and back to the lake.

Jane is more beautiful than ever, but her life has been an unhappy one, trapped in a loveless marriage and haunted by the memory of Leo. She has returned to the lake to try to piece her life back together.

Disillusioned with the priesthood, Packy realizes he's in love with Jane, too. But as a best friend and confidant to Leo and Jane, he faces a difficult choice this summer: should he help his oldest friend win back the woman of his dreams or pursue what might be his own last chance for love?

I was referred to Greeley by my mother. The thought of a Catholic priest writing these type of stories intrigued me. I have to disagree with some of the other people writing reviews of this book. This book was a good read. I had a hard time putting it down. The plot involving both the love lost and mystery was very interesting. And, Greely's use of different narrators gives a good perspective on what everyone was thinking and feeling at the time. I feel that the switching of narrators and the flashbacks enhanced the story. As for Greely writing about love, why shouldn't a Catholic priest write about that sort of thing? Like the other reviewer, I was raised Catholic. However, unlike the other reviewer I praise Greely for writing about love and was not disgusted by it. Catholic priests are human too, and Packy's character gives a lot of insight into the fact that priests' experience the same emotions that the rest of us do! Keep up the good work Greeley!

Famous Horses from the Big Screen

There is a unique emotional bond between humans and horses ever since the first man tried to mount this wonderful animal. Horses seem to have the ability to sense a person's mood and react to it. It is no wonder then that so many people enjoy books and feature films with horses as the stars. Here are some of the best known horses-actors.

Black Beauty

The book "Black Beauty" was written in the 1870's by writer Anna Sewell. She worked most of her life with horses and wrote the book especially with the intent to report and correct abuse against these animals. People all over the world know the story of Black Beauty, even if they never read the book. Since the 1940's three movie films have been made about this animal, telling his story in his own voice. Even a TV show was made that run for several seasons.

My Friend Flicka

Flicka was the horse of a young rancher's son Ken McLaughlin in Wyoming. At least it was so in the children's novel written by Mary O'Hara that told of their incredible adventures together around the Goosebar Ranch. The first movie was made in the 1940's and a remake in 2006 stars Alison Lohman as young farm girl Katy ... A television series ran from 1955 - 1958.

Seabiscuit

The story of Seabiscuit is based on a true story. Seabiscuit was a racing horse during the Great Depression, but not a very good one at that. For some years he performed at the very lowest levels of horse racing. But then three man saw the talents that apparently were hidden. Author Laura Hillenbrandt made him into a legend by writing a bestseller about him. The consequent movie adaptation was inevitable.

Trigger

Another real and living horse was Trigger. His fame came from the actor Roy Rodgers, who always appeared in films as cowboy. He bought Trigger in the 1930's. Since then the two became virtually inseparable and Trigger was as popular if not more popular than Roy Rodgers himself. Trigger died at age 33 and when he died his hide was stretched over a plaster likeness. Even today you can see Trigger in the

I'll read anything by Robin Cook, and I am especially fond of the Jack Stapleton character. However, the ending of Crisis (spoiler alert) was ridiculous.

I am still wondering who paid to have the three daughters terrorized. Since Craig Bowman turned out to be the murderer, I guess we are supposed to conclude it was him, but that doesn't really make sense! Actually there are a number of things that don't make sense, but the book was fun to read, so I guess I shouldn't nitpick.

But it was just silly to suggest that Jack wouldn't recognize Craig after a few days just because he dyed his hair. Come on!!

Also, I was a bit distracted by the misuse of words such as effect/affect, phased/fazed, and so on. Any decent proofreader/editor should have caught those.

Parents Can Be Reading Role Models

The famous Walt Disney wrote: "There is more treasure in books than in all the
pirates' loot on Treasure Island . . . and best of all, you can enjoy these riches every day
of your life." Educators need the involvement of parents to improve the quality of today's troubled
public education system. Parents can become reading role models for their children.

The following advice will help your child become a reader:

First, recognize the value of a good book. Books have tremendous value to people of
all ages- consider the following observation from a distinguished author, S.I. Hayakawa:
"In a very real sense, people who have read good literature have lived more than people
who cannot or will not read. It is not true that we have only one life to live; if we can
read, we can live as many more lives and as many kinds of lives as we wish."

Charles W. Eliot, the former president of Harvard University observed:
"Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and
wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers."

Family members can sit in the living room and read a good book-it's kind of hard to
do that with a computer. Reading books will improve your family conversations- it's
awfully boring to hear about video games and MTV all the time.

Second, choose books that are appropriate for your child. Keep in mind the following
when selecting a book:
*Babies and Toddlers- choose books that have color pictures if simple objects, text and
good rhythms. They enjoy indestructible books- boardbooksand cloth books.
*Preschool and Kindergarten-they enjoy nursery stories, books with words repetition, and
toy-like books that move, pop up, and are full of surprises.
*Early school years- select books with strong story lines and a character development.
Choose books with words your child will understand. Third graders enjoy books that
deal with topics that are interesting to them and books that include some challenging
words.
*Older children- search for books that fit their personal interests and personality traits.

Third, ask an expert for book advice. Our librarians spend hundreds of
hours reviewing books and would be glad to help you develop a list of great books.
If you are having difficulty locating a book for your child, visit http://www.askalibrarian.org. Other great
websites for books include:
http://www.nytimes.com/pages/books/bestseller (lists of best selling books for youth)
http://www.alastore.ala.org (lists kid's classics and teen favorites).

Fourth, read books with your child. According to Lucy Calkins, author of
RAISING LIFELONG LEARNERS, "Reading aloud and talking about books is part of
the education of the heart, and it is best done in families. And so we read aloud, then we
put books down to talk. We talk to identify with new heroes, to dream new lifelines, to

weave new stories into the fabric of ourselves. We talk bout books because we believe
in the education of the heart, but also because talking about books helps children read
more thoughtfully, to speak and write more fluently."

Can you imagine the impact if parents worked with educators to develop a generation
of readers.

Write a Resume For Results - The Cover Letter is Critical!

I have been in the field of human resources for 20 years and can honestly say that the cover leader is the most important submittal I receive, and the one I read first and most carefully. If you want to write a resume for results, a dynamite cover letter is critical!

Why? Well, with today's market conditions, and with the ease of applicants only having to punch "send" on an email, it's not unusual to receive up to a thousand resumes for any job that being advertised!

But, you may say to yourself "it takes so much time to write individualized cover letters!" Well, I say to you, "how strongly do you want that new position?"

This article will share some of the most important points of writing a cover letter and give you some shortcut ideas.

So how to stand out? A well-written cover letter must have the following elements:

1. The Cover Letter Must Be Individualized

This is not a place to use a "To Whom It May Concern' salutation because it shows you haven't put in the effort! Individualize the cover even if you have to do some detective work to figure out to whom to address it. Unless the ad is "blind", you should be able to figure out to whom to address it.

2. Be Very Focused in Aligning Your Prior Experience to the Position

Highlight how your achievements align with the position requirements. If you are a fabulous graphic artist and the position requires great creative juices, hone in on how your prior successes can be transitioned.

On the other hand, if you are a graphic designer and the position is for an IT programmer, save yourself the effort and the reader his/her time and don't submit your resume! You're wasting everyone's time.

3. Let Your Personality Shine Through

Reading resumes can be really boring! You want to send jolts of electricity through the reader so he'll sit up and say "Wow! This one looks good!" This is your opportunity to let the reader get some glimpse of who you are beyond a dry resume!

Communicate enthusiasm for the position, that this position fits your qualifications and experience to a tee, and that you are the best fit!

4. Follow-Up And Be Proactive

Sitting and waiting for someone to contact you can be agonizing...and so passive!

Take the initiative and say that you will contact them within the week to further discuss your qualifications and interest and hopefully schedule an interview.

If you are really lucky and get a chance to talk to the hiring manager, it will give you a "live" opportunity to communicate your skill set, interest and enthusiasm.

The truth is that the squeaky wheel does get an interview...sometimes just because they show persistence, excitement and a real interest in the position!

So how can you write a really good cover letter when you're exhausted from the whole process of applying and your creative juices are drying out?

Pretty Claribel Brown was not having a good night. Waiting in line for a bus in a torrential London downpour is no one's idea of a good time, and it didn't help matters when the person in front of her stepped on poor Claribel's foot and injured it.  But a handsome Dutch doctor who witnessed the incident whisked the young lady away in his Rolls Royce to her apartment to clean her up, so fortune must have been smiling down upon her after all.

Or was it? The good doctor turned out to be as brusque a fellow as any you would want to meet, and rubbed Claribel the wrong way every chance he got! And to improve upon the matter, he was apparently taking over rounds at Jerome's Hospital where she worked as a physiotherapist.

How will Claribel manage working with this overbearing man every day?

What worked for me:

Normally I don't care for books where the couples are always cross and at odds with each other, but this one usually had me chuckling rather than feeling annoyed. (Though I will say that Claribel's independent streak sometimes appeared more like slight immaturity in the form of contrariness for the sake of itself. But then, Marc's personality reminded me very much of that of Professor Henry Higgins in "My Fair Lady". No wonder Claribel's knickers were always in a knot!)

I've enjoyed medical stories ever since my mother handed down her Cherry Ames books to me when I was ten. It was nice to pick up another one, even though there was no mystery to solve.

Size-wise Claribel was a tall, well-rounded girl whom the hero referred to at their first meeting as "hefty". I couldn't help but picture her as a Sophie Dahl type.

What didn't work for me:

I can't imagine hauling my own two cats with me every time I go home to my mother's as Claribel did!

Overall:

A solid read for fans of sweet category novels and medical romances.

If you liked "The Course of True Love" you might also enjoy "The Bridesmaid's Reward", "More to Love", "Runaway Bay", "His Seductive Revenge", "Carried Away", "His E-mail Order Wife", "Spellbound", "A Worthy Heir", "The Legacy Tree", or "Sweet Memories".

Finger Lickin' Fifteen by Janet Evanovich - Book Review

Janet Evanovich has written dozens of novels and has been consistently on the top of the New York Times Best Seller list because of the previous novels in the Stephanie Plum series. Finger Lickin' Fifteen is the fifteenth novel in the series, aside from the novellas and short stories published that are also connected to the Stephanie Plum series.

Finger Lickin' Fifteen won't be released for another month, but speculations and different reactions from readers are already surrounding the best-selling author. It seems that the series has gone a long way since its first publication in 1994. Throughout the years, Janet Evanovich has proven to herself and the public that she could stay relevant and her novels, classic.

Like the previous novels in the series, Finger Lickin' Fifteen contains the romantic adventure plot featuring Stephanie Plum, a lingerie enthusiast-slash-bounty hunter. There could never be any sexier modern protagonist than Plum, and and Evanovich makes sure that every novel is better than the previous one.

Fifteen Lickin' Fifteen is also joined by the previous characters you have come to love like Lula, Mary Lou, Vinnie Plum, and Grandma Mazur. For those who have been waiting for the release of the book, I'm told you're in for a treat. Also, the new book is also a candidate for another New York Times bestseller, and if that isn't enough to get you all excited, maybe Janet Evanovich's long list of best-selling novels will be able to convince you. The scheduled release of Finger Lickin' Fifteen is on June 23, but already a lot of people are making reservations for the hardcover.

Free Dream Job Tryouts With a Cover Letter

Imagine on your next vacation you get to try out any dream job anywhere that you want. Charter fishing boat Captain, Surfing Instructor in Hawaii or Underwater Marine Photographer imagine the possibilities. Think about what a great idea this would be to give it a tryout before you leave your current secure employer. After all how will you really know the real truth about your dream job until you give it a go yourself? For a while when I was younger I had the itch to be a Chef in a fine dining restaurant. That was before I took on a job at a restaurant called Bell's Farm Steak House a local RI favorite while I was going to college at Bryant.

As I worked my first month as a waiter I had a lot of contact with the kitchen. I could see the tremendous pressure the Chef was under to pump out the food. Dishes had to be perfect, hot and look great all at the same time. In addition all the diners would generally come in all at once, so the kitchen would get buried with orders shortly after. If that pressure wasn't enough, the banquet side of the house used the same kitchen and Chef. While working there I learned the real truth about the late night hours, extreme stress and the hot humid working environment you can't escape from. That one was crossed off my list fast.

So how could you try out any dream job your heart desires? Simple really use a targeted resume with a professional introduction letter (cover letter) offering your services for free in exchange for a mentoring opportunity from your target. In case that first attempt does not work you can offer to exchange any other valuable services or products that might work. If you are an Artist, you might be able to exchange one of your oil paintings you would normally sell anyway. As a final resort you could always offer money too. You could try doing a little background research on your target and find a passion which might induce cooperation. If your would be mentor is a big golfing fan you could send him a weeks free membership certificate to a great golf course.

Even at my former employer Bell's Farm Steak house in Smithfield, RI it was fairly routine for our Chef Dave to host future Chef candidates from Johnson & Wales University, a local culinary college.

They simply exchanged their free labor for a two week mentoring opportunity from a superb Chef. It helped keep down labor costs, and the better performers in the program where actually hired on. Wouldn't it be the same with virtually any other profession? My advice is to take one small step towards living your dream right now and write up a great cover letter. Make an outline first with the ultimate goal in mind. If words are not your forte' you can always hire a writer. Remember researching your target helps increase your success rate.

By the way, I happen to know this works well since this is exactly how I started my mortgage career way back when. Good Luck!

The first kiss occurred in a dimly lit hallway on the upper floor of Elwin Hastings's grand house. Louisa never saw it coming....

Of course, Anthony Stalbridge couldn't possibly have had romantic intentions. The kiss was an act of desperation meant to distract the armed guard from catching the pair in a place they did not belong. After all, Louisa Bryce, in her dull maroon gown and gold-rimmed spectacles, was no man's idea of an alluring female. The only thing the two interlopers have in common is a passionate interest in the private affairs of Mr. Hastings-a prominent member of Society whom they both suspect of hiding terrible secrets. Now, brought together by their ruse, Anthony and Louisa are united in their efforts to find the truth.

Each has a reason for the quest. Anthony's fiancŽe was said to have thrown herself into the Thames-but Anthony has his own suspicions. Louisa-whose own identity is shrouded in layers of mystery-is convinced that Hastings has a connection to a notorious brothel. When Anthony successfully cracks Hastings's hidden safe-and discovers incriminating evidence-it appears that both their instincts were correct.

Yet Hastings is hiding far more than jewels and ledger books. Bringing him to justice will be more perilous than they anticipate-and their partnership will be more heated than either one expects. For it is not only Anthony's curiosity that Louisa arouses, and the two share something else: a thrilling attraction to danger. . . .

From the triple-threat author who also hits bestseller lists under the names Jayne Ann Krentz and Jayne Castle, this is a delightful new romp filled with suspense and wit-and the steamy Victorian passion her devoted readers love.

The River Knows (Thorndike Paperback Bestsellers) CustomerReview

Only a year or so ago, Louisa Bryce, a very intelligent woman, faked a suicide to run from the supposed murder of a very prominent, but very evil, man. Hired by Emma Ashton as a companion, someone to write her memoires, Louisa and Emma quickly become fast friends, where Louisa confesses all. In order to help, Emma is playing off Louisa as a distant cousin from the country who is now widowed. "Unimportant, unfashionable and excessively dull", Louisa manages to squeeze around the Polite World, uncovering deep secrets of the weathly Society ton. She is, after all, a journalist for the Flying Intelligencer, a notorious rag; pen name: I. M. Phantom. No one knows her background, and she intends to keep it that way.

Convinced that Elwin Hastings is up to no good, let alone a possible murderer, she sets off to investigate and find the truth. During a ball, she slips unoticed up the stairs to search his rooms. Leaving his bedroom, she is caught by Anthony Stalbridge, saving her from almost being caught by one of Hastings's personal hired guards. Seems that Anthony is convinced that Hastings murdered his fiancee, Fiona Risby. He's looking for proof - regardless if Hastings pays for his crimes, he still wants the proof. With a quick-witted discussion, the two become unlikely partners, both after the same goal.

And that's when the fun begins. Evidence is found in the way of business papers and one of Fiona's very expensive necklace (the one she was wearing the night she disappeared from a party); now Anthony and Louisa are sure there is more afoot and continue to dig. Louisa would like nothing more than to expose him to the Society he so desperately wants to belong to. Anthony wants him to confess to murdering Fiona. Will they get what they covet most?

Oh, you most certainly bet they do - almost more than they bargain for. Yes, you find out early on the who and what, but it's how the plot came about and to a close that keeps your attention. The more they dig, the more facts come to light, the more questions answered and more arise, that have you focussing on the story, and the main characters.

Louisa is a strong and intelligent woman, regardless of her naivete. She fights for what she believes is right, even if she's putting herself unknowingly in harm's way. Anthony is the only person in his family with a head for finances; seems his father, mother and sister are the eccentric artists of the family. Strong-willed and relentless, he had spotted Louisa right off and became intrigued by the unknown woman; he could see the intelligence in her eyes, no matter how dull she made herself seem in the form of dress and conversation. And the more time they spend together, the more they fall in love with each other. But Louisa believes that it can be nothing more than an illicit affair, especially knowing that, if anyone discovered her past, she'd be hanged for murder.

Quick-witted conversations, discussions and the hot passion they feel for each other will have you believing they are made for each other - two halves of a whole. I liked how Quick touched base on what it was like for woman in that day in age, where women were really considered the weaker sex, where they were valued for their looks, bloodline and money, not for their mind. I like how, not once but twice, Louisa rises above, first after her father dies, then after her faked suicide. It was nice to see Anthony falling in love with her, first and foremost, for her intelligence and integrity. Perfect match. Great climax to the story, even if you did see it coming. Couldn't have asked for better!

Synchronicity or Coincidence--You Decide

Synchronicity is a phenomenon where an event in the outside world coincides meaningfully with a psychological state of mind. "Meaningful coincidence"... Synchronicity - a term introduced by the depth of psychologist, Carl Gustav Jung's work... Recently the term "synchronicity" was introduced into pop culture consciousness by the artist, Sting (an avid student of Jung) and the Police. And more recently - the best seller book entitled "The Celestine Prophecy." The author, James Redfield, relies heavily upon the experience of "synchronicity."

Synchronicity was defined by Jung as an "a causal connecting principle," an essentially mysterious connection between the personal psyche and the material world, based on the fact that at the bottom they are only different forms of energy. Jung associated synchronistic experiences with the relativity of space and time and a degree of unconsciousness.

Synchronicity . . . consists of two factors: a) An unconscious image comes into consciousness either directly (i.e., literally) or indirectly (symbolized or suggested) in the form of a dream, idea, or premonition. b) An objective situation coincides with this content. The one is as puzzling as the other.["Synchronicity: An Acausal Connecting Principle," ibid., par. 858.]

The very diverse and confusing aspects of these phenomena are, so far as I can see at present, completely explicable on the assumption of a psychically relative space-time continuum. As soon as a psychic content crosses the threshold of consciousness, the synchronistic marginal phenomena disappear, time and space resume their accustomed sway, and consciousness is once more isolated in its subjectivity. . . . Conversely, synchronistic phenomena can be evoked by putting the subject into an unconscious state.[On the Nature of the Psyche," CW 8, par. 440.]

It is not only possible but fairly probable, even, that the psyche and matter are two different aspects of one and the same thing. The synchronicity phenomena point, it seems to me, in this direction, for they show that the non psychic can behave like the psychic, and vice versa, without there being any causal connection between them.[Ibid., par. 418.]

To gain a fuller understanding and appreciation for the Jungian concept of "synchronicity" - One needs to take a circuitous path called the Journey of Wholeness, or "Unus Mundus"...

Unus Mundus (literally meaning: One World) Journey of Wholeness

The four elements are depicted by the four cardinal Zodiac signs: Aries - fire, Cancer - water, Libra - air and Capricorn - earth.

Unus Mundus is the conjunction...

It's the royal mystical marriage of: Heaven/Earth, Sun/Moon, King/Queen transformed back into the original, undivided unity of the world soul... the world logos... the god image within... Unus Mundus is the final reuniting of our spirit, soul, and body with the world soul.
Unus Mundus In Alchemy

Renaissance alchemist Gerhard Dorn's highest goal and desire was transforming the four elements (fire, water, air, and earth) back into the original One World unity of Unus Mundus.

"Learn from within thyself to know all that is in heaven and on earth, that thou mayest be wise in all things. Knowest thou not that heaven [spirit] and the elements [matter] were formerly one, and were separated by a divine act of creation from one another, that they might bring forth thee and all things?... Know that man's greatest treasure is to be found within man, and not outside him...
From the alchemist text "Theatrum Chemicum" Volume One (1602 AD)

Gerhard Dorn's "Speculativae philosophiae..."

Unus Mundus In Mythology

In mythology, Unus Mundus is that mythical, imaginal place where heaven touches earth... Unus Mundus is the mystical land beyond all time and space... a sphere of unity where the opposites of: life/death, love/hate, peace/war, good/evil, spirit/matter all merge into one another and cease to exist separately... Then, there is only the One...

Christos "Understand that thou art a second little world and that the sun and moon are within thee, and also the stars...."

Origen, 2nd/3rd Century Christian Mystic/Theologian, Homilies in Leviticum, 126

Late 2nd Century Christian mystic Origen taught that Christ showed each of us the way to Unus Mundus by the example of his (Christ's) life....

Christ was the only person in the history of the world who had succeeded in the delicate, tricky balance of standing firmly with one foot in heaven while simultaneously placing his other foot on earth....

Unus Mundus

The place where heaven and earth meet.... it's the marriage of: Heaven/Earth, Sun/Moon, King/Queen
Have you experienced a "Unus Mundus moment?"

You know... Those brief, fleeting moments when we feel in total harmony with the flow and pulse of the universe? Those brief moments when we "somehow" know and feel that our lives are being mysteriously orchestrated by a power larger than ourselves? Those brief, shining moments when we feel more like "the windshield than the bug?"

Bringing Unus Mundus Down To Earth - (Unus Mundus & Synchronicity)

Examples of Synchronicity:

1. You're sitting at home... And then for no apparent reason you start thinking about someone you haven't thought about or seen for years... and at the same instant, the phone rings and it's the person you were thinking about... Synchronicity - meaningful coincidence... no apparent causal connection...

2. You're going on a road trip to San Jose, CA. Before going to bed that night, you set your radio alarm clock to wake you up the next morning with music. When the radio comes on the next morning, the words of the song playing on the radio are: "Do you know the way to San Jose?" Synchronicity - meaningful coincidence... no apparent causal connection...

3. One night, you have a dream about someone who used to be important in your life... This is a "someone" who hasn't been in your life, dreams or thoughts for quite some time - and the dream leaves you with an eerie feeling of concern for the "someone." Later on you discover that the "someone's" mother died on the same night and it was virtually at the very same moment you had the disturbing dream... Synchronicity - meaningful coincidence... no apparent causal connection...

Ten Book Collecting Tips I've Learned Over the Years

I've always enjoyed visiting book stores. I followed my brother-in-law around used bookstores for years. He started collecting books in the '80s when he was out on the west coast.

Though I liked browsing for books I didn't know anything about what made a book collectible. I didn't understand back then why my brother-in-law was interested in picking up Cormac McCarthy's All the Pretty Horses for a few dollars in a used book store ... but I do now!

In the late 1990s when the internet arrived ... my brother-in-law showed me how to look up the prices of books using Advanced Book Exchange (abebooks.com) and eBay. He gave me many other book collecting tips.

So ... in 1998 I decided to begin book collecting.

Here are the book collecting tips I've learned since then:

1) For a book to be collectible, it must be a first edition (also called first printing)

How can you tell? Well, open the book up to about the third page - usually the page after the title page - the copyright page.

Look near the bottom the page. There will normally be a line with numbers from one to 10. (i.e., 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0)

If you see a number line with a "1" in it then it is a first edition.

Nearly 80% of modern publishers have standardized on the use of a number line to denote the printing number.

If there is no number line then look for the words "first edition" or "first Printing" or "first published". For older books, it is best to consult one of the many books on first edition identification.

2) Book condition has a big impact on its value

Condition is critical to the value of a book. Just reading a book once can result in stains, tears, or rubbing that may reduce its value by 30-50% or more. The highest grades of a book are called Very Fine (essentially flawless) or Fine. The dust jacket condition these days is very important as the dust jacket can attribute up to 75% of a book's value.

I always try to buy books where the book and the dust jacket look essentially new (these are described as fine/fine).

3) An author's first book will usually be the most valuable book she or he writes

The publisher is taking a chance on a new untested author. So only a small number of books ... possibly only a few thousand books may be printed. If the author gets favorable reviews and sells out the first printing... the publisher may call for a second printing with more books. And sign the author up for a second book.

The author's next book will probably have a print run in its first printing of ... two to three times that of the author's first book. You can see due to supply and demand the first book's value will be higher ... perhaps much higher than the second book!

4) Collect hardcover books

The trade edition hardcover is usually the first book sold. It will have a much greater longevity than the paperback which will turn yellow over time and the pages will become brittle. Paperbacks may come out six months to a year later. Paperbacks are made to be read. Some may choose to collect them but I don't. The same goes for book club editions. These books are shorter, thinner and don't have a price on the dust jacket.

I buy paperbacks for reading ... not collecting!

5) Select books from these book genres: Literature, Science Fiction, Fantasy and Mystery

What does genre (pronounced zhahn'-ruh) mean? It is a category or style that can refer to movies (for example horror films), music or books. Books in other genres such as history or biographies can be very collectible, too. But they may not reach the heights of value that the fiction genres can.

6) Book awards

Books that have won book awards are often very collectible and valuable. In particular ... be on the lookout for an author's first book which has won an award.

7) Books that are generating a buzz may be worth collecting

A book collecting tip to consider is collecting books with good book reviews, is on best-seller lists... or the book is being made into a movie.

8) Signed books

Books that are signed by the author generally increase the value of a book by 20 to 100%. Authors sign more books early in their career ... and less as they become more famous. So later signed books by well-known authors may have considerable value ... even if many first editions were printed.

Watch your local newspaper for author signing events. There are fewer independent book stores these days ... but many are able to stay in business and thrive due to famous authors coming to sign.

9) A book will be more collectible from the country in which it was first published

Often the same book is published both in the US and in the United Kingdom. If it was published first in the UK it will be called the "true first" and have more value. Books published in the UK and Canada are printed in lower numbers due to the small populations - this makes them more valuable.

10) Valuable first editions can be found on the bargain shelves in major book stores

Publishers discount books that have stopped selling well or that have been reprinted too many times. First editions of authors' first or second books can sometimes be found ... for six or seven dollars. Often without a remainder mark (that reduces the books value) on the bottom or top of the text block.

By following these ten book collecting tips, you can over a period of years build a nice library of valuable first editions.

Top 4 Ways to Ensure Your Book is a Bestseller

How do you know if you have a bestseller on your hands or not? What if you are the writer and you are completely confident that the book is unbeatable? You've had several professional book critics check out the manuscript prior to publishing.

You've had numerous pre-publication book reviews done, critics dissected it and the best in the business critique it; thus, you went into publishing the book prepared, ready, and producing the utmost quality reaching perfection, but you are still not on the bestseller's list. You are left stunned and unsure why. Believe it or not there is actually a checklist publicists and publishers review before pitching any book as a bestseller and it should be your guide before writing and publishing your next book.

1. Timing is everything. Timing of your book is crucial in relations to the topic of the book and if the topic is a popular subject at the moment or not. Is it a hot topic in the media? Are office employees talking about it at the water cooler? For instance, when Octo-mom appeared on the scene, then it would have been a perfect moment to release a book covering the tribulations of giving birth and raising multiple sets of kids at once.

2. Use a grabbing title. The title is crucial regarding how to pitch your book and whose interest shall it peak. Too many times writers have award-winning stories on their hands, but lose potential readers with the title. Thus, ensure the title is appropriate, gripping, interesting, and keeps the reader wanting to pick up the book and never put it down until they are completely done with it.

3. Create a cover to attract your audience. It is true that people do judge a book by its cover. Bookstores will tell you that customers pick up books, flip through them solely due to the cover grabbing their attention. Therefore, before creating a cover ask yourself if the graphics stand out amongst the other books on the shelf. Are the colors inviting to your target market? For instance, if you are writing a fiction book geared towards women, then normally the book cover has appealing colors to females attracting the target market.

4. Use the grapevine. The best type of advertising for your book is to start talking about it to any and every person you meet. If you are in line at the grocery store, shopping, at the gym, on Facebook, make sure you tell people about your book. The only way people are going to know about what you are up to and have published is to tell people. In addition, you want the gossip chain to continuously flow regarding you having a book available.

Hence, it starts with you and without you kick starting the process, then the word about your book will never connect with the grapevine halting publicity possibilities within reach. So remember before publishing your next book make sure these four tips are in place, and you shall have a bestseller on your hands.

Getting Published in Fantasy - Why is it so Hard?

Fantasy is a genre where most books are produced by a very few (big) publishing houses in the UK and USA. These are the houses that can afford to take the risk on large print runs because they have many other titles too. They produce a few fantasy titles (bad luck, authors) in big volume. Big volume is necessary for most kinds of book printing, but fantasy is the most critical, certainly within fiction.

Let's see why. I'm a fantasy fan. I won't buy a fantasy title unless it is (a) thicker than a doorstop (b) reasonably priced. I don't buy hardcovers or large format (expensive) paperbacks - I look for that small fat little book which opens up to a world where I can get lost for days and days. The fatter the better.

Mass-produced magic

So to sell, the fantasy book needs to be long, most often double or triple the length of the common novel. That means it costs almost three times the amount to produce. And yet, the average selling price for these books is very close to that of your mainstream fiction titles. So you've got a product which has a low selling price and a high cost price. The only way to get your cost per book down is to drive the size of the print run up. Short runs or on-demand printing just don't work when you've got a 650+ page book.

Mass markets mean lower prices

In a niche market (like non-fiction - Paragliding in South Africa) you could sell a book that thick for R350 ($50 or £24) because there is limited competition and the information has high value to a small number of people. In a mass market such as 'fiction', even 'fantasy fiction', there are so many wonderful books out there which your title will compete with, and they dictate the price - as set by the mass market paperback produced in masses. That's $15.99 or £7.99 thanks to Harper Collins, Penguin, et al. for the trade paperback, and even less for mass market format.

Print on Demand too costly

So you can get your book all made up via Print On Demand services like Lightning Source or Lulu, and still be out on the bench with a product that is 4 times the price of the competitors. I don't care how good your writing is, unless you can make me levitate in my chair I'm not going to buy your one sparkly title instead of FOUR of the top fantasy authors' new releases.

Low volume doesn't work

So I've just printed 5 000 copies of my fantasy novel (in the small South African market the mark of a 'Best Seller' is around 4 000 copies). Will they sell? Yes, I hope so, but that's not why I've printed so many. I've printed that volume because if I print less than that, then the books you buy through the bookstore, priced at current market values make me nothing. (Retail price minus bookshop markup, minus the markup of the distributor, delivery costs, development costs, printing costs, advertising, office, tax). Truly. I could print 2000 copies of the book, market my heart out, sell all of them through the bookstores and not even get my money back. I have to go big, or go home.

Would you bet your money on magic?

When faced with this kind of gamble, many publishing companies will decide to go for another kind of book. It may not be the quality of the writing they are rejecting, it's the risk in entering the market given the minimum efficient print run costs and the small unit returns. Unless they can see it selling by the tens of thousands, it just isn't worth it.

Thankfully there are a few publishers who are prepared to take a long shot, and you can bet most of them are fantasy fans. You have to believe in magic to make magic happen.

Your Resume: Design vs. Content

There are two basic components to a resume. The first one is CONTENT. The second one is DESIGN. Both elements are critical in determining the success of the resume.

What does the design component consist of? Quite a few aspects of the resume fall into this category. Here are some for you to peruse:

type and color of paper

format

layout within the format

font(s) used

white space

Determining the design your resume can contribute a great deal to the impact you make to prospective employers. A resume must not only contain the right words and qualifications, but it must be easy to read.

When a pile of resumes are first taken out of their envelopes, the process of making a first impression begins. You can't take a chance of being ruled out at any stage of the process, so your materials must be superior.

Do you know what your competitors are doing? If not, then you need to ensure you are doing everything possible to give yourself an advantage over them. Keep in mind that they could just as easily be reading the same information you are right now. How are you going to out-perform them?

You are going to ensure that each design component is outstanding!

The next component of the resume that you must strive to do well is the content portion. There is nothing of more important than speaking to a prospective employer's needs. When you are able to communicate your achievements and abilities in a positive way, then you have a good chance of getting a call for an interview.

That means you must tailor the content to each employer's specific needs for the position you are seeking. It is not difficult, but you will need to put some thought into it.

Think of it this way. We know very well that salespeople use our names whenever possible to make a sale. They know what people like to hear their names used. It's personal and it adds a touch of authenticity to the salesperson. Why? Because they took the time to find out about us and then put it to use.

The same holds true for prospective employers. When you take the time to find out about them and then use that information in your "marketing materials", you have a better chance of succeeding.

A hiring manager will know immediately if your resume is being mass marketed to dozens of organizations. If you are not making an effort to speak the language of each company you send your resume to, you will not find success in the job-search process.

It is a relatively easy process, but you have to put some time into the research aspect. It will pay off, though, when you get an interview!

Best of luck!

How To Make Your Book A Best Seller

Turn on the light. Unlock the door. Here are the amazing secrets that can no longer be kept in the dark!

So how do books become best sellers?

Usually hyped out of this world by the publisher, if he thinks he has a good seller on his hands. But we're not talking publishers. We are going to talk about you. I have seen books which were amazing and sold zilch. Why not? No hype.

From here we are assuming you have written a book. A "How To" type book which you fully researched before you even wrote it because we all know, don't we? You check out the potential market first!

You spent day and night for 2 weeks writing it and editing. Your finished manuscript is at the printers. You had someone design a "hip" cover with a well thought out marketing blurb on it. It will be ready in 2 weeks but the cover design and blurb is done first so we can promote it.

Find all the digital stuff you own that can be sent by email. Don't own anything? Get onto some gurus and do some in depth interviews. Put a retail value on the interview. Make sure it's worth money. This is what you are giving away. You are happy. The gurus are happy because they get plenty of exposure.

Everyone who buys your book now has a compelling reason to do so. They not only get the book for $9.95 or $19.95 but a ton of free information worth more than the book itself. So, they buy the physical book from Amazon They show you the receipt. They receive from you all the digital items by email.

Get everyone and his dog sending out emails re your forthcoming book being released on "X" date, with picture of front and back covers. Send out to everyone on your email list, friends, family, business and get the gurus who gave you the interview to do the same.

This is the simple strategy to use. You must believe in your book. It must worth the read. It must be informative. It needs to get talked about. Ask everyone to tell everyone they know or pass it on to their email lists. On and On. Give tons of free stuff to all those who buy it. Buy eBooks, reports and any digital things which you receive master rights to sell as you wish. I am sure you will find other methods and ways

You might even earn a lot of cash besides becoming a guru. Good luck and let me know how you get on.

It's goodbye from me

That's it folks

The Bridge of San Luis Rey (Perennial Bestseller Collection) Overviews

This beautiful new edition features unpublished notes for the novel and other illuminating documentary mate- rial, all of which is included in a new Afterword by Tappan Wilder.

"On Friday noon, July the twentieth, 1714,the finest bridge in all Peru broke and precipi-tated five travelers into the gulf below." With this celebrated sentence Thornton Wilder begins The Bridge of San Luis Rey, one of the towering achievements in American fiction and a novel read throughout the world.

By chance, a monk witnesses the tragedy. Brother Juniper then embarks on a quest to prove that it was divine intervention rather than chance that led to the deaths of those who perished in the tragedy. His search leads to his own death -- and to the author's timeless investigation into the nature of love and the meaning of the human condition.

The Bridge of San Luis Rey (Perennial Bestseller Collection) CustomerReview

The book "The Bridge of San Louis Rey" plagues you with the question, "Why those five?" The book then goes into a small segment of the personal lives of all the victims of the bridge collapse, ultimately leaving it up to you to decide and think about. The book was extremely well written, with careful attention to vocabulary, and sentence formation. Therefore, I give the book a 4 out of 5. All that being said, I personally did not like the book, it's just not the genre that i like to spend my time reading.
