12 Easy Ways to Select A Topic For a Non-Fiction Book

So you want to write a non-fiction book. Maybe you have an idea and maybe you don't, but choosing a topic for your non-fiction book should be easy. Start with what you know, love, or care about, but always, always, always search for the unique angle. Simply rehashing the same old, same old won't cut it.

Talking about a new angle-how many diet books were in the market prior to Dr. Atkins entered in 1989 with his high-protein, low carbohydrate diet? More than you can name, I'm sure, from the infamous Grapefruit Diet to the Scarsdale Diet. Every new diet idea has to have a book, or two, or three. Diet books were already a huge market. The field was crowded, but his new angle was a breakthrough and changed the diet scene forever.

Shortly after it became a smash hit, other protein diet books appeared. He spawned a whole new way too look at diets and this motivated other authors. There were books created to support his point of view, other books to tweak it, and others to challenge it. Then along came the cookbooks. High-protein, low carbohydrate recipes were all the fad. I don't know the total number of books created directly as a result of the Atkins diet, but I daresay it is in the thousands. Do you think the publishers said, "Oh no, not another diet book?" Or did they rush it to print to take advantage of the buzz?

What do you know that is a little different from what has been published before? Bookstores and libraries are chock full of self-improvement books. How many ways are there to find your inner power, create success, sleep better, be happier, stop smoking, find God, and develop irresistible powers of attraction? Yet, with all of this information truckloads of new self-help books hit the market every year. Each of them say essentially the same things, but they all seek  a different hook. Will new angles ever be depleted? It doesn't seem so, but if you have one, don't sit on it or someone else will come up with it too while you are languishing in the starting gate. A good idea is too valuable to waste.

Is there new information you can bring to the table that may have been overlooked? Research and discoveries are continuing in every field of endeavor. If you are keeping up with the latest information, your book by hitting the market first could propel you into the spotlight.

Has technology changed the landscape? How? There are few subjects that don't benefit from improved technologies. Even in fields like restoration of old paintings technology is used to discover what is unseen to the naked eye but vital to the correct restoration.

What do you expect will happen to your topic in the future? Project yourself into the future, 5 years, 10 years, 20 years, or more. What does the future hold for your field of interest?

How has your topic altered, improved, or ruined your life? Get personal. Readers are bored with dry reading; they want to know what your experience has been, even if it turned out badly. Especially if it turned out badly. In fact, there is a reason news shows lead with murder and mayhem. It's sick, but humans are very curious about disasters. Even if your experience is and was very positive, you'll want to look for some contrast to create drama.

Has new information been unearthed that alters previously held beliefs? People are forever studying the history of this, that, or the other. You can rest assured that someone will come across with an old memo, forgotten manuscript, or lost photos. Perhaps those discoveries will contradict previous truths.

Do you have doubts about the subject and can you prove them? Every subject needs balance. If all of the books written glorify your subject, you may think about being the devil's advocate. Look for evidence of the dark side.

What are your ten rules? Huh? You don't think you have rules, ah but you do. Things that we enjoy doing required us to learn how to do it. Think back to when you started and list the steps you had to learn to master it. Write them down one through ten and dedicate a chapter to each of those steps.

How does your subject fare in other countries? Would utilizing practices from a foreign country improve performance here? Have the practitioners of your subject in distant lands created ways and means that are more effective? Would your readers be served well by knowing what those differences are?

What have you always wanted to say but kept to yourself because certain areas are sacred cows? Fear of rejection or expulsion has killed many a good book. If you have a burning desire to tell something that will stir up trouble, it takes real courage. Do you have enough guts to be the one? Just think of all of the people who would benefit from the truth you are keeping to yourself.

Who will read your book, a well-informed practitioner, or a novice? Consider the books currently in the market on your subject. If the majority of them are written for the beginner, perhaps the experts would benefit from your expertise. Be sure you don't write over the heads of the newbie's or talk down to the pros. Write for the audience you choose. The purpose of a non-fiction book should be to dispense information, not dazzle the readers with your prose. Save that for creative writing classes or novels.

Can you latch on and ride with a trend? Like the Atkins example, is there something hot in the marketplace right now? Maybe it doesn't even have to directly relate. If something in your title, or cover art indicates a relationship you could benefit from the trend. When President Obama was elected there was a fervor that rivaled religion. Suppose you had a book of stories and folk sayings from his birthplace Hawaii, couldn't you call it something like Folk Stories from President Obama's Birthplace? I know it is a stretch, but crazier things have been done like the Obama Chia Pet.

Non-Fiction Book Titles - An Author's Supreme Responsibility

Perhaps you have considered writing some eBooks or self-publishing some print books, either way, the Title You Choose has more to do about the sales success of the book than you might think. Not long ago, I looked at the various books that I wish to write and sat down to do a little practice picking out titles that might sell.

After I was completed with the practice effort, I realized how difficult that really is. Two books that I have read on "book proposals" both made it clear the importance of practicing and coming up with the best book titles, both suggested going to the bookstore or library and trying to figure out why a book caught your eye. The two books on this subject that I read both have full chapters dedicated to picking out titles:

A.) Bulletproof Book Proposals - by Pam Brodowsky and Eric Neuhaus

B.) How to Write a Book Proposal - by Michael Larsen

Take a look at this list below of "titles" and consider, what titles you might have chosen and why. Also think to yourself if you saw such a title on a book, would you pick it up to peruse or would your eyes move onto the next book?

1. Religion at a Cross Roads - A Discussion on the Absurdity of Human Religion

2. A Test of Will - Biking Across America - Lower Latitude Routes

Below are three titles of eBooks that I have written with a combined total of 1 million downloads:

How to Run a Successful Car Wash Fundraiser

How You Can Help in Honduras

Plan of Action for Nairobi Slums

This is a very serious subject for the Non-Fiction Writer, and perhaps even more important for the author of fictional works. So, you need to study this and try to come up with the best possible titles, if you want your books to sell. Think on it.

13 Back Cover Tips For Non-Fiction Soft-Cover Books

Book studies show that prospective readers spend about eight seconds looking at a book cover before deciding whether or not to buy. If the book is opened and table of contents and testimonials are read, chances are the book will be purchased. Therefore, how can you as the author, get your reader to pick up you book, open it and purchase? I believe it all comes down to four key areas:

A. Author's Willingness to Commit The Rest of Their Life to Promoting Book

B. Cover Design (Which Includes Back Cover and Spine)

C. Title, Subtitle, Tagline, and Back Cover Headline

D. Finally, Actual Content of the Book

Since cover design is listed near the top, below are 13 recommendations I strongly encourage you to implement to help improve your book's chance of becoming a bestseller. These tips are listed from top to bottom as to how they should appear on your book's back cover:

1. Genre of Book: The only reason this is important is that it tells the bookstore employees where to shelve your book within their store. If your title can fit in to multiple genres, I encourage you to list no more than two. This is in upper left corner of back cover.

2. Back Cover Headline and Sub-Headline: This is located at the very top of the book and must be a bold statement to immediately grab the attention of your prospective reader. This headline is basically the title of your back cover. It should be in large print and bolded (bigger than any other print on your back cover).

3. Summary Paragraph: Under your headline / sub-headline you need to include summary of what your book is about, why the reader should care, and how the book will improve the reader's life. This should typically be 3-5 lines.

4. Author Quote: This author quote is completely optional. However, if you as the author have come up with your own quote and place it on the back cover of your book it will soon be all over the Internet and quoted on other Web sites - all of which will bring more free publicity to your book.

5. "You Will Learn How To" Statement: This comes next on the back cover under author quote. In this section you re going to include 4-8 bullets points of what your reader will learn by reading your book. Oftentimes, these bullet points can be created by highlighting 4-8 of your best chapters in the book.

6. Testimonials: Lets face it, it does not matter what we say about our book, it matters what other famous people say about our book. Therefore, ideally you should list 2-3 testimonials from other recognizable author names that are in the same genre as your book. These testimonials should be no more than 2-3 lines.

7. Author Photo: If your book is a novel then your photo is not required. If you are writing a non-fiction and branding yourself as an author, speaker, coach, and consultant, then inserting a professional color photo on the back cover lower left side is extremely important. Note: never put your photo on the front cover of your book unless you are a world-famous celebrity. In doing so, it will be a dead giveaway that your book is self-published. However, always put your photo on the back cover.

8. Author BIO: This is very important to have 4-5 lines to the right of your photo telling the world who you are and branding your expertise. Make certain that whatever your 4-5 biggest streams of income are, you list these titles in your bio. If you want to earn income for speaking, coaching, and consulting then reference, these areas of work.

9. Sales Closing Line: This is missed by virtually all authors even though it is so important. Basically, here you are re-emphasizing why your prospective reader needs to buy your book. For example, my sales closing line on Creating You Own Destiny says: "This book is your compass. Let Patrick Snow help guide you to your own destiny!"

10. Publishing Imprint: Under photo and bio, you want to insert the logo of your publisher. If you are self-published, under no circumstance use your last name anywhere in your publishing company's name.

11. ISBN Number and Barcode: One the lower right hand corner of your book, you need to list your 13-digit ISBN number and below this number should be your ISBN barcode. This is very important so that bookstores can scan your book and sell to their readers. Without an ISBN number and bar code, your work is not really a book.

12. Price Amount and also Pricing Barcode: Just as you need and ISBN number and barcode, you also need the same for your price. When a bookstore scans this barcode the price should appear in their system. Oftentimes authors will forget to also include the actual price of the book in this area as well. If your book is in the 150 to 300 page range and soft cover, you should price your book between $14.95 and $19.95. You get over $19.95 for your book is if it is hardcover.

13. URL / Domain / Web Site: I would argue that behind the title of your book, this is the most important item on your book. URL should be listed in big, bold print, at the lower left portion of your back cover of book. The only other item on your back cover that has a bigger font would be that of your headline and sub-headline. Be sure to capitalize the first letter of each word in your Web site address to make it easier for buyers to read and memorize. I can't tell you how many readers have joined my newsletter after seeing my URL on my book in a bookstore. Often, instead of buying my book they simply memorized my URL and are now a subscriber to my newsletter. If I do my job, eventually, they will purchase a copy.

As you can see, there are a lot of detailed items to consider that need to be included on the back cover of your book. I encourage not rush this process. Take your time, and get your back cover of your book to look exactly as you desire it to be. The majority of my clients who come to me seeking help after their books have been published, are those who have room for improvement on their back cover.

If you are in need of help with your back cover, please contact me, and I will offer you a free 30-minute publishing consultation, to help you with you back cover and also position your book to become a best seller through other author promotion campaign ideas that you may not have considered.

An Easy Way to Write a Nonfiction Book - Start With a Nonfiction Book Proposal

Are you ready to write a book Nonfiction? It 'easy to do if we start from a non-fiction proposal. Need the book proposal is, however, if you go to your publishers to submit non-fiction to a literary agent now.

'S also useful to have one, so that your testimony, your ideas for booking guests, friends and colleagues, going to give, and the person, etc., your contribution will find many prefaceBenefits, prepare a proposal for a book, decide to publish self-employed. E 'in writing your book much easier.

This book is the part that you need not write-fiction book proposal:

What is your first concept book unique?

Go to the library or bookstore and writing more books with a similar idea, the concept and definition of something a bit 'different. I prefer my local bookstore, where I can touch and goFeel the books and read the back cover and the index. Once you have enough information to tell five friends about your book unique idea and get their opinion. It is useful to hear the views of others, making sure that your idea work book and market.

Create a second major title and subtitle.

Develop a short song, emotional and memorable. The subtitle comes later, and there may be a more descriptive title. One of mybooks is entitled, "Top 10 Traits of Silicon Valley Dynamos." The sub-title is, "Inspiring Stories and Great Ideas for Achieving Success in Your Life." This gives a clear picture of what the book will cover.

3. Research your subject well to prove you are the expert to write this book.

You are going to have to show editors that you did some good research for your book. Also editors want to know about the current published books that are the same concept as your idea and how your book will be different. Great research will help you do a good job with the words you put on paper.

3. Name your chapter titles and provide a brief summary of each chapter.

Now comes the meat of your book. Naming your chapter titles will help you with your thoughts, and keep your story well organized. Write a brief sentence or two as to what each chapter will cover. You will start with the Introduction, Chapter 1, Chapter 2, etc. A typical nonfiction book has 10-12 chapters.

In my book, "Silicon Valley Dynamos" I originally outlined 50 short 2-3 page chapters. Then I decided to interview some successful people I knew to include in the book. So I shortened the number of chapters to 15 and made them longer chapters.

Start with your chapter outline and summary chapters. Get started with your writing. Be flexible. If you think it's not going to work the way you set up the chapters, change them to fit your new plan.

This is going to take you time. Find a secluded place to develop your chapter outline where there will be no interruptions. Turn off your cell phone and television. Play your favorite music to get you in a positive and motivated mood.

Once you have your chapter titles in place you can start writing. This will make writing your nonfiction book easier to do because now you have a roadmap. This is just the start of a book proposal. There is much more such as marketing, platform, query letters, etc. We'll cover those in future articles.

To get you started with your writing follow the above: 1) Identify your unique concept, 2) Create a title and sub-title for your nonfiction book, and 3) Name your chapter titles and summarize each chapter. Now you are ready to write.

Book studies show that potential readers of more than eight seconds to take a look at a book before deciding whether or not to buy coverage. If the book is opened and read the index and certificates, it is likely that the book be purchased. Therefore, you as a writer, how to get your readers to get up open book, and buy? I think everything depends on four key areas:

Author A. Foster 's willingness to commit the rest of their lives Book

B. CoverDesign (including back and spine)

C. Title, subtitle, tagline and rear Headline

D. Finally, the actual content of the book

Since the roofing project is at the top, the 13 recommendations which I strongly advise you to improve the implementation of his book have the option of becoming a bestseller. These recommendations are listed from top to bottom, such as your card appear back cover:

1. Kind of book: The only reason this is importantsays that employees of the library, where you save your book as a record. If your book to measure different genres, I encourage you to not more than two lists. This is the reverse in the upper left.

2. Headline rear and sub-headline: This is just the beginning of the book is and should be a bold statement at the same time serious attention of potential readers. This title is basically the title of your back. It must in large type andfat (larger than all other print on the back).

3. Summary Paragraph: In your headline / title sub, you have to abstract what is your book about why the reader should care and how the book the reader is introduced to improve the lives are. This should normally be 3-5 lines.

5. "They want to learn the explanation": This is next on the back cover from the author. This section goes back to 4-8 bullet points, what will your readers learn from reading your book are. Often, these shells can be 4-8, highlighting your best chapters are created in the book.

6th. Witnesses: Lets face it, no matter what we say that ourBook, no matter what other famous people of our book. Therefore, the ideal is to have 2-3 references list of other recognizable names of which are of the same genre as your book. These certificates must be more than 2-3 lines.

7. Author photos: If the book is a novel that is your picture is not necessary. If you are a non-fiction and branding yourself as an author, speaker, trainer, writing, and consultants, then inserting a photo professional color on the backbottom left is extremely important. Note: You can never take your picture on the cover of your book, if you're a celebrity of international fame. This is a gift that your dead book published knows, of course. However, always at your photo on the back.

For example, my line of closing sales to create their own destiny, says: "This book is your compass. Let Patrick Neve door to your destiny!"

10. BooksEnter Legal: Taking pictures and bio, you want the logo of your publishing house. If you're self-published, in any case, with your name all over the name of your publisher.
