The Harlequin Romance Legacy

When people think romance novel, the first thought that pops up may be 'Harlequin Romance'. And why not? Harlequin romance novels have been around for decades and continue to be the leader in series romance in the world. Harlequin romance novels have definitely withstood the test of time, and are still going as strong today as they were in the 1960's.

Based in Toronto, Canada, Harlequin romance continues to publish over one hundred titles of serial romance every month. This publisher's books are printed in twenty-five different languages around the world and are written by over one thousand talented romance writers from around the world as well. Harlequin doesn't just offer office romance any more, however, but psychological thrillers, mysteries and historical romance genres as well. Harlequin remains one of Canada's most successful book publishers, with sales of over one hundred and thirty million books a year. Harlequin Romance offices make their presence known around the world as well, with offices scattered from Toronto to New York to Tokyo and Warsaw. Because of the worldwide reputation of Harlequin Romance publishers, writers for Harlequin are able to be globally marketed, a bonus for those fortunate enough to be signed on with the huge publishing company.

Harlequin romance offers something for just about every reading taste, and is generally a tamer romance than some found on book market shelves. Still, there are different imprints within the Harlequin publishing house that attract different age groups and types of readers, and guidelines provided to authors wishing to submit their romance fiction manuscripts must follow Harlequin guidelines to the letter if they hope to be published with the illustrious company. Harlequin romance books are also still one of the more affordable offerings out there in the romance reader market, making them popular by price range and content both. Harlequin has just about every age bracket tagged, from young adults to thirty-somethings to the over the hill-ers. Every Harlequin romance book that rolls off the presses offers a compelling read and great characters.

Women's fiction has long made it to the top of the New York Times bestseller listings, and Harlequin is often seen at the top of that list. Harlequin Romance books publish works in a variety of imprints, including Silhouette, MIRA, LUNA, Red Dress Ink, and HQN books, among others. With over two billion Harlequin romance imprints shipped to buyers all over the globe, Harlequin can do just about anything it wants, and it wants to continue to be a leader in women's fiction for years to come.

The Harlequin Romance website is an exciting, reader friendly neighborhood that keeps fans of Harlequin up to date on the latest signings, releases and attractions to come in the near future. Since the 1960's, Harlequin romance books have settled in their place on library and bookstore shelves, and nothing seems able to knock them off. It's a given that the Harlequin romance is here to stay. Short, fast reads appeal to today's always-on-the-go-women and Harlequin offers them exactly what they're looking for.

Pretty Claribel Brown was not having a good night. Waiting in line for a bus in a torrential London downpour is no one's idea of a good time, and it didn't help matters when the person in front of her stepped on poor Claribel's foot and injured it.  But a handsome Dutch doctor who witnessed the incident whisked the young lady away in his Rolls Royce to her apartment to clean her up, so fortune must have been smiling down upon her after all.

Or was it? The good doctor turned out to be as brusque a fellow as any you would want to meet, and rubbed Claribel the wrong way every chance he got! And to improve upon the matter, he was apparently taking over rounds at Jerome's Hospital where she worked as a physiotherapist.

How will Claribel manage working with this overbearing man every day?

What worked for me:

Normally I don't care for books where the couples are always cross and at odds with each other, but this one usually had me chuckling rather than feeling annoyed. (Though I will say that Claribel's independent streak sometimes appeared more like slight immaturity in the form of contrariness for the sake of itself. But then, Marc's personality reminded me very much of that of Professor Henry Higgins in "My Fair Lady". No wonder Claribel's knickers were always in a knot!)

I've enjoyed medical stories ever since my mother handed down her Cherry Ames books to me when I was ten. It was nice to pick up another one, even though there was no mystery to solve.

Size-wise Claribel was a tall, well-rounded girl whom the hero referred to at their first meeting as "hefty". I couldn't help but picture her as a Sophie Dahl type.

What didn't work for me:

I can't imagine hauling my own two cats with me every time I go home to my mother's as Claribel did!

Overall:

A solid read for fans of sweet category novels and medical romances.

If you liked "The Course of True Love" you might also enjoy "The Bridesmaid's Reward", "More to Love", "Runaway Bay", "His Seductive Revenge", "Carried Away", "His E-mail Order Wife", "Spellbound", "A Worthy Heir", "The Legacy Tree", or "Sweet Memories".

Romance Novels - The Most Popular Genre of Literature Today

While many would find fault with the above title, the claim that romance novels are a form of literature, the fact remains that more romances are read than any other genre in North America. This has been the case since 2004 when fifty five percent of all paperback books sold were in the romance category.

That's an incredible amount of books, and surely a vast array of people reading them. But here again, there seems to be an unwillingness to accept that facts. Why? Because many like to claim that only women who are single, desperately unhappy or just desperate, and let's not forget uneducated, are the only people who read romances in any form. And this is despite reams of data that disputes these claims.

So, what does the data show? That women and men from all walks of life, from the poverty stricken to the wealthy, from the uneducated to the over educated, from single people and those involved in fulfilling, long term relationships, from the unemployed to those who are top grade professionals, read romances.

Romance novels are also looked upon with a degree of derision. Many say, and I will admit that in some cases there is a degree of true in this, that these types of books simply follow a formula. That if you've read one, you've read them all. But that can be said for many mainstream, New York Times bestsellers as well. There are mainstream authors that I refuse to read anymore, because the plot is exactly the same in each and every one of their novels.

But for those who like to read a good romance for whatever the reason, the good news is that there is an endless stream of them available. And there is something to fulfill every taste. Romantic suspense, romantic comedy, western romances and so on. The sub-genres of the romance category are many and varied.

So, do you like to read romances?

How to Write Romance!

Romantic fiction is one of the most popular forms of fiction worldwide, for everyone likes a feel good story once in a while! There are many people who specialise in writing romance - Dame Barbara Cartland made a cottage industry out of it - just as those that specialise in other genre, but the fact remains that romance sells - and in big numbers! You may have already written your romantic novel or short story, but either the way the advice that follows will be of interest to you and all those who wish to follow this entertaining and often lucrative genre of writing.

The first important factor is to know your audience; as with all styles and genre of writing there is a particular audience that is attracted to the typical romance novel, and it is quite a simple demographic - the majority, indeed the vast majority, of buyers and readers of romantic fiction are women.

This is not to say that you have to be a woman to write romantic fiction - far from it, for many men are very successful in the field - but that you have to have a good understanding of what women want to read about. If you are female you will have a good angle on this, but if not then it is worth talking to female friends or, and this applies anyhow, joining an online writers group dedicated to those who wish to write romance.

A very useful pointer comes from reading others work - either by offering to critique someone's work through a writers group or by reading well known (or not so well known) romantic fiction; it is interesting to note that romantic fiction these days is often split between two distinct groups - one is that which is focused on history, the other the very modern and semi-erotic romantic fiction - but both are equally popular. To write historically based romantic fiction well you must have some idea of the period you are writing about - research is all in this instance.

In writing romantic fiction a lot of the success of the story is in the characters; you need to make sure your readers like your characters - or in the case of the traditional cad that they don't like him - and that they can, to some extent, relate to he or she. The younger woman reading romantic fiction may see herself in the heroine, about to be rescued by the knight in shining armour, and this is all very important in the structure and success of your writing.

The best advice is to read a selection of romance novels and short stories, and to get an idea of what is popular on the market, and also to use the advice and criticism that comes from those at writing groups, but most of all give it a go!

Dangerous Men and Adventurous Women: Romance Writers on the Appeal of the Romance (New Cultural Studies Series) Specifications

Why read 'em? Why write 'em? Some of us may scoff at romance novels, yet they make up 35-40% of mass market paperbacks. They have a language and a genre all their own that non-readers don't (or won't) understand. This series of essays by popular romance novelists explores the unique qualities and purpose of romance novels.

Dangerous Men and Adventurous Women: Romance Writers on the Appeal of the Romance (New Cultural Studies Series) CustomerReview

I got this book as a quest for answers to understanding the nature of language, women. As referenced in this book, romance novels account for about 50% of total book sales. This means that from a perspective Mans, which in this genre to resonate with Venus and gender, if nothing else, we need to see which language patterns is worthwhile.

I noticed, in all cases, the attractive packaging of the words in the description. Where a reasonable man would say "I love you", the novelNovelists said: "There's this deep desire from the heart of my being to express to you the intense feelings of warmth and tenderness of infinite love that I meet in this wonderful journey we have developed together." And that is the romantic hero, these words would be.

I also liked the explanation, if a writer has admitted that they want a romance with the kind of man who would never have a stable relationship would be fun. hmmmmmm, age, what the old PCPhrase that describes the winner of this attention?

From an information point, I stand to enjoy some of the lessons learned from this book. It 'was enough to repeat would bring home the point, and as a research exercise was worth the time and money.
