Book Club Recommendations For Starting A Book Club

Book clubs have been around for a long time. Call it a "book discussion group" or a "reading group" but it's all the same - a chance for you to get together with a group of people to read and discuss [hopefully] great books.

Most people think that when you start a book club you just pick a book, set a meeting, and go with it. Yes, this is the basic structure of a reading group. However, there is quite a bit more thought required. Here are the main things you need to think about:

Choosing a book - very hard for some people, very easy for others. Your aim is find a book that will produce a good discussion as well as something you want to read.

Setting up book club guidelines - there are absolutely rules that you must agree upon and follow as a group if you want to be successful as a book group and not just a regular gossip session.

Book Club Menu/Food decisions - do you want to do appetizers? Heavy desert? Full dinner? Follow a book theme? The possibilities are endless.

Type of club - you can choose to build your club around a particular theme (i.e., yoga, cookbooks, nonfiction, etc)

The key to a successful book club is structure and finding a group of people that are in agreement about the way the reading group should be run. I'll give you an example using my "real time" book club as the feature.

The No-Whining Allowed Club is our name. We meet once a month, on the first Tuesday of the month. At the meeting we discuss the previous month's book pick. Our basic structure is: arrive at 6pm, catch-up and gossip over appetizers, eat dinner and discuss more serious things (not book related yet!), move to an area where we can all sit in a circle and discuss the book and have desert. Our book discussions range from 30 minutes to well over an hour depending on how good of a book we've read. The person who chose the book always starts by rating the book 1-5. Then we all go around and do the same thing. After that the floor is open for discussion. At the end of the meeting the next month's book, who will also be the host, is revealed.

The Internet ATM Cash Machine! How to Make Over $20,000 Per Month on Internet Marketing on Autopilot

Starting an internet marketing career is not an easy task but this is not usually because of the work; people fail and easily give up because they are not earning money on their first few weeks which is a common error among first timers.

Popular question that I get from subscribers is "how much money do I make online?" and my answer is "I earn $20k or more every month", sounds impressive? But in reality a newbie can also earn the same amount if they only know the proper way in doing it.

As a beginner you should be patient. Since you are just starting with your business expect that your earnings will be little, but the important thing is that you are generating money in continuously regardless of the amount. Do not rush your journey to success because this may result in your failure. Take easy and money will flow naturally as you get the hang of it.

Once you are making some money consistently the next step that should concern you is how to make your online business grow. If you are already earning enough money online you should try investing some of it like selling web sites which is very profitable.

Imagine a simple, one page affiliate website can be sold for $5k or more and in a month you can do this 3 to 5 times that is $15K to $25K monthly, aside from what you earn from the website itself before selling it, that's more than what you can earn having a high paying job. This is just a part of my online business.

My online business works by creating small affiliate sites, profit from them and then selling them while I create new ones; this is on a monthly basis. I make sure that I maintain a number of websites which can be seen on my portfolio. You can also use this approach as your online business model, since it is very profitable, but remember to re-invest your profits to make it grow.

The next step to take is to outsource. Find people online that are willing to do the job for you. The more workers that you have the more products you can produce. But this is a process that you will need to learn slowly. You should be picky in choosing providers that can give quality results. Learn how to outsource and innovate as it can help your online business grow.

Although I am already earning over $20k monthly, I decide to still keep working hard because I have bigger goals and a bit ambitious too. I keep on working and think of other ways on how to earn 20x more of my current income and to further develop my online business.

There are other success stories that you might read online and one can be yours too just remember the key to online success is your willingness to learn and by being persistent in your endeavor. Make sure to start as an affiliate Marketer since creating affiliate sites is very simple and require no investments and not internet marketing experience at all.

The Publishing Game: Bestseller in 30 Days CustomerReview

This book is filled with practical advice on how to navigate the sometimes unintuitive coastline of the publishing world. I agree with Dan Poynter's review, "This book IS your marketing plan." And it's alot more. With chapter subheads like, "How much money should I spend?" and "Advertising in the Chain Stores", Reiss gives authors and self-publishers practical advice on questions we all wonder about.

The book is presented in the form of 6-week plan. Though I haven't followed it exactly, I really appreciated how straightforward and organized it is. Thank you, Ms. Reiss for writing down and codifying all your hard-won experience with this industry. A great boon to us newbies!

Great British Authors and Famous Books of the Last 100 Years

Britain's rich literary heritage produced several British authors that wrote great masterpieces. Some of the most famous British books made significant impact on the contemporary world literature and inspired the production of extravagant blockbuster movies.

So here is a partial list of Britain's great contemporary authors and the books that they published.

The Fantasy Adventure Genre

When you survey contemporary fantasy adventure works produced by UK's top authors, you should not miss J.R.R Tolkien. Tolkien wrote the world famous The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Tolkien is one of the many British authors who received international accolades after they died. His books, including The Hobbit, continue to sell widely.

Another famous fantasy adventure author is Joanne K. Rowling. JK Rowling is an award winning author who wrote the Harry Potter series. Rowling's books continue to dominate the world's best seller lists until now.

Britain's Most Famous Children's Writers

Jacqueline Wilson is one of the most famous British authors writing contemporary children's literature. Wilson is renowned for her famous children stories as well as novels about children. Her famous published books include The Story of Tracey Beaker and Girls in Love. Jacqueline Wilson received a distinction as Britain's Children Laureate. She still writes novels and short stories about British children facing real problems in a contemporary world.

Another great children's writer is Quentin Blake. Every child in England loved the works and illustrations of this distinguished British author. Quentin Blake is the first Children's Laureate of England. He started his career as a cartoonist and children's books illustrator. In 1968, he published his first novel Patrick. He received numerous awards for his children's books and his novel Angelo was made into a children's opera.

Contemporary Realism Genre

Most modern British novelists tackle modern problems and approach such subjects quite frankly. The realism of the novels of these authors accurately captures the dark and lighter side of humanity.

Irvin Welsh, an Edinburgh-born author, is probably one of the most popular modern writers in England. His book Trainspotting delved deep into the stark realism of urban youth in Edinburgh hooked on heroin.

Trainspotting was the first book published by Welsh. It was adapted into a movie and instantly made an impact in the indie and modern cinema. After Trainspotting, Irvin Welsh continue to produce human realist books such as Marabou Stork Nightmares.

Another contemporary realist writer who specializes in modern fiction is Rose Tremain. She was born in London and got her education at the Sorbonne University. Tremain published her first novel in 1976. After her first book, she continued to write several novels that made into print. Rose Tremain is a recipient of several literary awards and Book of the Year awards.

Her famous novel The Colour, which she published in 2003, was included in the short list of the best books for the Orange Prize in 2004. The novel tells the story of the 1860 gold rush in New Zealand.

There are hundreds of contemporary British authors that have made significant impact on world literature, cinema, and theater. It simply shows that British literature is very vibrant and continues to produce world class novels and literary masterpieces.

Sell More Books on Amazon.com

Why Should Your Book Be on Amazon.com?

Credibility. If your book is important, it should be available at the world's biggest book store.

Visibility. People (including members of the media) will find your book and learn about you through your appearance on Amazon. (That's how I got into Woman's Day magazine.)

Money. You will sell books you wouldn't have sold otherwise. Many buyers won't buy from your Web site or other sources, but will buy at Amazon. And, Amazon pays like clockwork.

Get Your Book Listed on Amazon.com

Your publisher or distributor will handle getting your book into the Amazon catalog. If you are self-published and don't have a distributor, join Amazon Advantage at http://www.Amazon.com/advantage

To participate in Advantage, you must have distribution rights, and your book must have a scannable barcode of the ISBN.

Amazon Marketplace

Once your book is listed, you can also sell it directly to consumers through Amazon Marketplace. You will find more information about this on the Advantage information page listed above.

Amazon Associates

Once your book is listed on Amazon, join the Associates program http://www.Amazon.com/associates

As an Associate, you get a commission on book sales referred from your Web site. Why send people to Amazon from your Web site? Some people won't buy from you. They don't know you and they don't trust you. But they do trust Amazon. Or, maybe they want to qualify for free shipping.

Enhance Your Book's Detail Page

Add cover art, book description, editorial reviews, table of contents, excerpts, author information and more. Make your book's listing just as complete and impressive as the latest from Stephen King, John Grisham and other major authors. For more information, see Bookseller Services at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/catalog-guide/guide/-/372286/ or log in to your Advantage account. Amazon will generally not allow URLs in your content, so don't try to slip your Web site in.

Search Inside the Book

This is controversial, but many publishers say they sell more books as a result of SITB. My sales seemed to go up after my book was in. You send Amazon a copy of your book, they scan it and make the entire book searchable. It increases the chances your book will come up during searches on the Amazon.com web site. You'll find information on the Advantage page.

Use the tools Amazon.com provides to bring book buyers to your page and sell more books.

Audio Books - The New Entertainment Trend

Audio books are now becoming a very popular entertainment source to many people from around the world with very different tastes and cultures. This is because audio books are now being produced primarily for entertainment purposes and to give a wider source of entertainment to the masses of people logging onto the Internet everyday.

One of the main reasons online fiction stories are becoming increasingly popular with today's entertainment hungry audiences is because the online fiction stories that are made can only be enjoyed in the audio book form and not in any other media type such as movies, books or short story articles.

Audio books also offer a completely new type of entertainment, compared to other forms of media such as video and books where you have to concentrate on physically reading or watching while audio books can be played while you relax on your couch or lying on your bed.

Audio books are becoming a very popular way that people of all ages are entertaining themselves and I personally highly recommend everyone should try it out. If audio books are not for you then that's fine but you might just fall in love with them.

All the great online fiction stories that NewFiction offers are written by professional authors and are acted out my famous actors and actresses so the quality of their online fiction stories is one of the highest I have seen to date.

If you don't think you are the type of person that will enjoy online fiction stories I highly recommend you try it out and listen to a few, you never know you might just find some great audio books that completely grip you into wanting more.

Sarah Orne Jewett's collection of sketches of life along Maine's coast in the 1880s would probably pass as creative nonfiction if it debuted today. There is virtually no separation between author and narrator, and the subject matter isn't just taken from life, it is the life of the place she describes. It is a charming exploration of people shaped by place--and as such it delivers many satisfying aspects of a novel--character, situation, setting, dialogue, theme, with the plot being the unfolding psychology of the people and place.

The book begins with the narrator's arrival in Dunnett Landing, a village that had thrived in the seafaring era that the Industrial Age had all but eclipsed. She had visited it as a child and has returned to it for the solitude it affords a writer. At the center of the book is her landlady, Mrs. Todd, an herbalist who does brisk business as the town's pharmacist of folk remedies. Through her the narrator comes to know aged sailors whose day has passed and the people who live even more remotely than the Dunnett Landing folks, on the outlying islands. She hears of the most extreme case, a woman who had fled to the outermost island to live as a hermit for years after a disappointment in love. At a large family reunion that serves as the book's climax, the narrator sums up what she has learned about the intersection of people, time and place.

A word about this particular edition of The Country of the Pointed Firs: It is something of an enigma. The cover begins interestingly enough, a photograph of a shoal of beached rowboats, a common sight in Maine harbor towns framed by what appears to be a handwritten page from a notebook set with a brown background to the black ink. But then it gets a bit strange, with an oddly worded, unfinished description of the contents set on the first cover, and set off by even odder punctuation. Inside, it is devoid of all publishing identification and there is no dedication, there is a plain title page, followed by a contents page followed by another plain title page in a different font, and then, the first page of the book appears on the back of that, on the left side. The paper looks and feels like copier paper; in fact, it looks like it was produced on a photocopier. There is a catalogue listing for other minor classic texts produced by the same publisher and the descriptions are, again, oddly worded. That said, aside from a couple of offset lines and odd treatment of punctuation here and there, I had the sense that the text was ultimately complete.

Please be aware that this book is written in a writing style that some have not seen before: Direct and to the Point. If you are more concerned about grammar and prose rather than the story, please move on- as this book may not be for you. However, if you are more interested in revealing the truth hidden in the works of a great story, then in this book may lie your answers... Illuminati 2012 - What if everything you have been taught to trust and believe is a lie? What if there is a secret government within our own that has been in place for centuries? What if that organization is using its unimaginable wealth, immense power, and the fervent worship of their god to bring about the end of times? Illuminati - 2012 will take you into the very depths of human corruption and wickedness while it enlightens you to the true meaning of good versus evil and the power of faith that is in all of us. The main character, Ethan Swan is enormously seductive; a young man who is thrust into a surreal world of darkness, lies, and a horrifying truth. "The only question you will be asking yourself upon reading this book, is if this is simply just a work of fiction...or is it something more?" Ethan Swan is a unique and very interesting character struggling with his 'personal demons'; he could most definitely be the next action hero!

What more can I say, other than I loved this story. I would love to see a movie version of Illuminati 2012.

If you like Action Adventure, Science Fiction, Thriller, and Originality - this is it.

How a Book is Born - One Author's Story

Not all books come out whole, all at once. In fact, most books ease out little by little. They have strange and wondrous beginnings. Some come from speeches, some come from articles or short stories. Your book may evolve from a teleclass or coaching experience with a client. The saying goes if you write a page a day, at the end of a year you'll have a book--a big book at that! But then, why think so big? Twenty-five years ago, I gave Speedreading and Memory seminars. I thought of myself as a teacher or trainer, not an author. After joining Toastmasters and National Speakers Association, I learned enough to strengthen my presentations to promote my personal growth skills business. My audiences from corporate and community education wanted handouts to take home with them. Seeing a need I revised and edited my how-to articles, then bundled them into short books. The articles came from my talks, wide research, and my own experiences. I wrote the books I needed and wanted to read. So can you! Check out your files today, and see what undiscovered gems are there. Only 10-60 pages long, these books were quick and easy to write. I priced them for my health and personal growth audiences as well as offering my proven consulting expertise to corporations. Presenting 15 public seminars a month, these simple short books sold well at the back of the room as well as leveraged higher priced corporate training, all enough to make two-thirds my income for the next 15 years. The irony of this story is that I did write a long book--sort of. At 160 pages, Passion at Any Age is complete, but my passion for it has waned. Following the traditional route, I submitted a book proposal to 30 agents. Five liked it, but their limited book tour offers and knowing I'd still have to promote it myself, made me think. Too much time and money down the drain unless I was already famous. I ended up giving away a chapter at a time to my book clients to inspire them. I also realized you can't market effectively more than two or three products at a time. Since my book writing, publishing and promotion knowledge made me a savvy expert, I offer ten new eBooks on Book writing, Online promotion, Web marketing and copywriting, and ePublishing as well as one-on-one coaching and teleclasses, so clients can learn by their preferred style. Remember, your book is your business card and helps evolve your business. Through writing a book, you not only help your audience solve a particular challenge, you share with the world your unique experience to make a difference in people's lives. Your book is an extension of yourself, your skills, and your own style. It will bring you consistent, monthly income as it does for me. My 20 years research and weekly seminars on how to write a book have come full circle. As a book coach, now, I encourage professionals to write a book--just write a short book! Make it an eBook. Think 10-30 pages. You need to write your book and share your unique message, but you also don't want to spend all of your time on it. Begin your book today by writing an article that answers one of your book audience's challenges or problems. You can then, string several articles together. Include more stories, examples, how-to's or exercises in your new book's chapter formats. Before you know it, your book will grow. They always grow longer than you think they will. You will have plenty of pages, and each page will deliver practical, inspirational material to your new clients and customers concisely and directly--the way they want it. Remember, Offline and Online potential book buyers want information. But, they no longer want to read hundreds of pages. They don't want to spend time reading a long book. Will business people buy your book? Yes! They are hungry for information--information that only you have and can say in your unique way. Will your book sell? Yes! With just a few significances such as "presenting useful, practical information," or "presenting material that could change a life," or "creating a deeper understanding of human nature," your book will be a great seller. Feel the sense of completion by writing your book this year. Don't worry about how long it is, its format, how much it will sell for. Remember, like me, you can write your print and eBook at the same time! And keep it going for your lifetime.

Terry Moran is a cop whose rapid rise in the department came to a crashing halt when he was accused of butchering his brother's wife. The accusation alone was enough to destroy a promising career, and now, twenty years later, he is a pariah among his peers; a lost and broken soul merely going through the motions of living and operating from the depths of his despair. Then the body of a young woman is discovered in an alleyway in a downtown commercial district--savagely slain with a gaping hole where her heart heart should be--and the all-consuming flames of supicion are feuled once more.

The saddest thing about Eugene Izzi's last book, completed just before his bizarre death by hanging in 1996, is that it could very well have been the start of a very successful series--just what this talented crime writer needed to get his career back on track after some false moves and setbacks.

Dominick DiGrazia, the criminalist of the title, is a fascinating, gifted Chicago homicide detective who has carefully avoided the promotions that would remove him from the actual work of investigating crimes. He has trouble keeping his explosive anger in check as less-qualified superiors try to misuse or take advantage of his expertise; his thorny personality and high standards also mark him as a loner. But when a pregnant young prostitute is murdered and savagely butchered on the 20th anniversary of another similarly horrible killing, DiGrazia asks Janice Constantine--a tough street cop in her 50s--to become his partner. It's a smart choice for him and a pleasure for readers: Constantine is a wonderfully real, totally unglamorous character with raspy edges that help keep DiGrazia honest.

Suspects in the new murder include Dr. Tom Moran, the psychiatrist whose pregnant wife was the first victim two decades before; Dr. Moran's cop brother, Terry Moran, whose career is frozen by rumors of his own involvement in that case; and Mike Schmidt, DiGrazia's former partner, obsessed to the point of alcoholism and insanity by the earlier case. And, as in Izzi's earlier books, Chicago in its many mean and meaty guises plays a major role in this final effort. --Dick Adler

The Criminalist CustomerReview

Previous reviews have well summarized the characters and plot of The Criminalist. All I can add is I never read an Izzi book without hoping it would never end. I hated to see this novel come to a close. It is brilliant in every respect: storyline, characters (chillingly real, honest, and abrupt), and realism. This novel held me from beginning to end. I cared about the people, I grimaced at the stupidity or venality of some of the police characters, I felt for DeGrazia whenever he was frustrated-I just was deeply involved in every aspect of this work. I am sure everyone who reads and enjoys this book will agree with me in my firm belief that Eugene Izzi did not commit suicide. He was murdered! A writer of such brilliance, with so much going for him, could not be that far gone. The circumstances of his death lead me to believe there were elements in Chicago who felt he was getting too close. To what? We'll never know. I read every book I could find by Izzi. I, for one, mourn his loss. He was a true great.

Using YouTube to Promote Your Book

These days if I miss something funny or important that was on television I'll think to myself, "I'll look for it on YouTube." This popular site has become so infused with our culture that it seems to have replaced television altogether as a resource for news and entertainment. In today's short-attention, quick-fix society, one needs only to visit YouTube for a three-minute visual rundown of a hit movie, or to catch up on homegrown, underground soap operas created and filmed by regular people with the time and the chutzpah. With Google's recent acquisition of YouTube for over one billion dollars, it goes without saying that this site will prove to be a media powerhouse in the future.

Because YouTube is essentially built by registered members who contribute their own video content, it should also be noted that authors can take advantage of the site's popularity and usability to increase their own exposure. Lately, I have noticed authors creating "trailers" to advertise their books and using YouTube for distribution. It may take a bit of work to figure out how to do so, but using YouTube to promote your books can propel an effective word of mouth campaign that draws readers to your book.

YouTube adds dynamic multimedia to your website. One factor that makes YouTube so popular is the ease with which visitors can share favorite videos. Send-to-a-friend links allow one to alert family and friends to must-see clip, while special EMBED HTML code offered by YouTube allows bloggers and site owners to implement videos on their own pages. As YouTube hosts the video, there is no unneccesary uploading of large files to your site. By hosting a book trailer on YouTube, you allow other users to apply codes and showcase your videos throughout the Internet, thereby lending a creative, free advertising campaign for your work.

YouTube enhances the message of your book. While you may offer a compelling blurb, glowing reviews, and attractive cover art on your site, sometimes readers need more to be convinced to make the purchase. Offering a well-designed book trailer for consideration gives your book the star treatment. Mood music, attractive imagery and taglines that sell draw the reader into the short clip and entice them in wanting to learn more about what you have written. Movie companies have drawn many a film buff to the theater based on sixty seconds of a film's premise. It is effective advertising that drives traffic and builds readership.

There are, of course, caveats to consider when thinking of creating a book trailer. For one, major media companies are very vigilant of sites like YouTube, looking out for copyrighted material used for illegal purposes. If you are seriously interested in creating a book trailer for promotional purposes, you want to be certain any music clips and images used are either in the public domain, acquired through royalty-free databases, or acquired for use with the permission of the copyright holders. While you might not think it significant to use something for thirty seconds of streaming video, there is always the risk of being caught by somebody who recognizes a picture or melody. Before you begin your book trailer, make sure all materials are okay to use.

Find Materials

For imagery related to the subject of your book - be it romance or science fiction, a biography or self-help, there are a number of royalty-free photoggraph databases that offer thousands of images to represent every emotion and setting you wish to realize. Istockphoto.com is one such resource, where pictures can be bought for as little as one dollar. For royalty-free music, the aptly named RoyaltyFreeMusic.com may prove to offer the sound you want to accompany your work. If you are feeling especially daring, you might want to consider approaching a band for a sample clip to use. A quick search on MySpace, for example, yields a good number of musicians using the Internet to promote their music. A promotional exchange (their credits in your trailer for use of their music) may prove to be beneficial, and can improve word of mouth on your trailer as the group advertises where to find their music.

Making the Video

If you own a PC, you will more than likely find it is equipped with a program called Windows Movie Maker. This nifty tool allows you to combine photographs and streaming audio, and add titles and taglines to the frames that make up your video. Taking the time to explore options and like frame transitions (including star wipes and side wipes)
and visual effects (fade in, fade out, sepia tone applications) will allow to create a look unique to your story. Start with an attention-grabbing tagline, continue with imagery related to your story, adding taglines on photos where appropriate, and finish with a shot of your book cover and information on your website and where to purchase the book. Scrolling end titles completes the trailer, and before you know it you have a clip to add to YouTube!

Most book trailers may run anywhere from thirty second to two minutes. You don't want to make the trailers too long. For one the longer a clip is, the more memory it takes up, and the longer it may take to load. A viewer who has to wait too long will eventually get frustrated and go to another clip. You want to be sure your book trailer is recorded at a length that allows computer users of all Internet speeds to enjoy. Also, you don't want to give too much information away in your trailer. Tease pertinent information and entice the reader to learn more at the point of sale.

As an interactive marketing tool, book trailers created for YouTube are a creative and inexpensive way to get the word out about your book. Include the trailer on your website, and the URL in your e-mail signature and show readers exactly what they are missing unless they buy your book.

The Broken Road Written by Keifer Bonvillian

The author describes this book, "A story of drugs, sex, alcohol, and FEMA fraud". Keifer Bonvillian took a job to help clean up Louisiana after the disastrous hurricanes hit his parents' area of living, Terrebonne Parish (in LA. They call them Parish's while most in the United States call them counties"). Keifer had never done this type of work before but he figured he could do it, as he was not afraid of hard work. What he got into was a nightmare that he still lives within his mind today. The corruption that occurred by the company he worked for, Beck Disaster Recovery opened his eyes to what can and does go wrong when the government takes charge without really taking charge!

Keifer started as a manual laborer and soon moved into monitor and then a supervisory position for Beck. He saw corruption every day by employees of Beck, contractors, local government employees, and even the out of state management of Beck. I am not going to go into individual names that the author mentions, some he trusted who crossed him, and many he couldn't trust from the moment he met them. When he became a job monitor, followed by supervisor, he did all he could to make things legitimate but every which way he turned, someone was on the take or were involved in helping others receive sex, drugs, alcohol or a combination of all of them. He discovered the many discrepancies in truckloads of disaster related refuse and how the measurement varied so much from truck to truck and contractor to contractor. Many employees would clock in, make an appearance, then take off for a bar or motel/hotel where they had women, mostly employees, to do as they wished. In most situations they were paid enough in money or any of the aforementioned methods of "payment" to make corruption stand out, impossible for an honest person to take as normal and correct.

Keifer has told all of what he learned mostly the hard way through living it. But in general, all his complaining to superiors were not taken care of and, in most cases just caused a few monitors or supervisors to be switched around or only a token person here and there to be placed on "stand-by" or laid off at least temporarily. While Keifer has laid out a tremendous amount of wrongs over time, he seems to duplicate himself in some of the situations. I think this was caused by his thorough disgust at the handling of the many discrepancies he discovered. Keifer has turned all of the results he had found, tapes, emails, letters, recordings of meetings, and other proof of fraud over to the FBI. He has high hopes that further action will be taken so this type of corruption does not occur in this magnitude again.

The Rise of Atheism - ABC additional Christopher Hitchens

A large convention of atheists gathered today in Virginia, where men, women and children eagerly proclaimed their belief God does not exist. While their views still may be the minority in the country, atheists have become more vocal and visible in recent years. T-shirts, bumper stickers and even rap songs proclaim atheists' beliefs. Atheist summer camps now exist for children. "Over the last 20 years," said Alan Wolfe of Boston College, "the number of people willing to tell people in surveys that they don't believe in God have pretty much doubled." Books denying God's existence have topped bestseller lists, and Congress has its first self-proclaimed atheist, Rep. Pete Stark, D-Calif. "A lot of respectable people are coming out and saying they are very happy to dispel the myths of the Bible," said Margaret Downey of Atheist Alliance International. Some atheists said their profile has increased because of a rise in religious extremism, like the Islamic fundamentalism behind the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 and the rise of the Christian right in the United States. Gathering of the Godless Meanwhile, the Internet has helped unite non-believers. In fact, this weekend's convention sold out, and had a waiting list of 600 people. Besides listening to speakers, convention attendees can buy merchandise like a born-again-atheist hat, atheist-on-board signs for those with kids, or after-the-rapture mints. They also had the opportunity to mingle with celebrity atheists like authors ...

Book Promotion Woes?

Too many new authors believe that once their book is written the sales will just come pouring in and they will make a bundle. Sadly, this disillusionment is shattered when they receive a royalty check. The honest to goodness truth of the matter is that the writer's work is only started when the book is released. Even the huge author names of today began by peddling their books out of the back of their car. Many big-name authors also began by self-publishing because no one recognized their talent. They did not start off their career with a huge bang. They did not have the money to afford publicists and big marketing firms when they started out and yet they are super successful now. Take heart from their examples.

Marketing, promoting and networking must be done every single day, for the life of the book, in balance with your other activities and obligations.

Many new authors feel their only way to success is through book signings and bookstores stocking their book. They are wrong. While in larger centers with good promotion a book signing event or book reading event may result in as much as a couple hundred one-time sales... most smaller venues can only expect less than 10 sales. Is this worth the 2 hours or more that you spend at the event? Not counting all the preperation, marketing the event, promotion materials, time taken from work and any displays that you have designed and possibly paid for ahead of time. These events do not pay authors to host an event so any sales they do have may not even cover the traveling costs, hotel cost, meals, parking or supplies - let alone the time they put into it. Nor do they usually result in long-term sales - sales are often only during the few days around the event.

Bookstores can only realistically stock less than 1% of the 3 million books available on the market. Their discount with the publisher/distributor is large. Authors are paid royalties only on what their publisher has recieved. So is all the time and effort going into attaining spots on bookstore shelves worth it?

While the markets above are valuable and important to any author - what authors need to do is think outside the box. Figure out where your efforts will bring the greatest results. Don't expect immediate and overwhelming acceptance by the media or your audience. Marketing, networking and promoting are long-term efforts that will reap greater rewards as efforts continue.

Many authors live in tiny towns and hold down jobs or have physical limitations that prevent out-of-town promotions; much like ourselves. This can be overcome. Again, think outside the box, use the Internet and your contacts - and be persistent. Newspapers, libraries, and bookstores are only the most obvious markets and also are the most difficult to gain the attention of without a strong image because everyone is vying for their attention. Work on your image and get strong promotion materials that help you stand out among the hundred thousand or more new books released annually.

So develop a long-term marketing plan and stick with it for the full term of your contract with the publisher. The market plan will grow and change as time goes on. And keep good records so you can determine how you will go about marketing the next book.

I just wanted to mention here that some authors get overwhelmed by the immense amount of effort it takes to market a book. If we take one day, one step at a time we will find it is not so overwhelming. I find it works best to figure out what you will concentrate on this week and then set a goal for today. I do this nearly every day. It helps me keep a steady pace going, without taking on too much or too little.

Remember too, that efforts you are making today may not reap immediate results. You may have to hit a market several times before they pick up your proposal. For instance, some contacts from nearly a year ago are now resulting in promotions in their publications. So be patient and professional in all that you do. Again, keep records so that you can follow up.

Newsletters can be small but effective markets for your work. On average, they can range in size from 1000-17,000 readers or more. E-zines typically reach an audience larger than 5000. Get a few of them in one month and you are reaching a wide audience! You don't need to be rich or famous or have a publicist if you are determined and able to commit effort every single day. (Do take some time for yourself, though!)

James Redfield and The Celestine Prophecy

In 1989 James Redfield resigned from his job as a counselor and therapist to disturbed adolescents in Alabama and devoted his life full time to writing. This was a very brave move but "The Celestine Prophecy" went onto to sell more than 20 million copies worldwide. The story of the publication of the book is certainly worth telling as it is one of the most inspiring publishing stories ever.

Having quit his job, James Redfield sat down to write his book. He was a not a natural writer and found the process sometimes difficult. He recounts in his later non-fiction publication "The Celestine Vision" which appeared in 1997 that his journey was possible through the remarkable power of synchronicity. Curiously he explores the power of seeming coincidence in one of the earlier chapters of the original book. He says that when he got stuck people would show up, or a book would drop into his lap that took him to the next step in his revelation of the nine insights that he reveals when he came to write 'The Celestine Prophecy'.

The project hit a brick wall in 1991. He had finished writing after two years of hard work and then he turned to getting his book published. He says he received some offers from publishers but none of them seemed right to him. This disheartened him as he interpreted this seeming lack of acknowledgement as failure. He took some more time to use the insights that he writes about to help him in his own life. The plot, which reads like an adventure story is set in Peru and synthesises the author's explorations into Psychology, Eastern and Western Philosophies, Science, Ecology, History and mysticism. When he looked at the insights as a stepping stone in his own life, he generated more insights, which he was able to include in the book.

Soon afterwards as 'synchronicity' would have it, he bumped into a publishing consultant form New York. He introduced Redfield to the concept of self-publishing. The first print run numbered 3,000 copies. The author and his wife Salle gave half of these away to select individuals and small booksellers in their surrounding area. Word of mouth did the rest, as the recipients of the books were keen to recommend "The Celestine Prophecy", so thanks to this marketing, in six months they had one hundred thousand copies in print. The Redifield printing phenomenon was so successful that it came to the notice of Warner Books. They bought the rights and published a hard cover edition in March 1994. In 1995 it reached the number two position in the New York Times best seller list and then got to number one slot in 1996, where it remained for the best part of a year. Even Britain's Prince Charles boasted of having a copy of the book beside his bed.

The account of the success of "The Celestine Prophecy" demonstrates that an author can write a novel or a non-fiction book, stick with it and have a success story beyond his or her wildest expectations. Here's a question have you ever thought of writing a book?

Book Review - Novelist's Boot Camp

Todd A. Stone

Novelist's Boot Camp (Hardcover)

101 Ways to Take Your Book From Boring to Bestseller

ISBN: 978-1-58297-360-9

Page Count: 309

Ready to take on the challenge of writing a novel? Don't think you have the time? Novelist's Boot Camp may be just the book to help you over the hurdle. It equips aspiring novelists with unique, step-by-step drills that apply novel writing techniques. Within his boot camp theme, Stone trains writers (who he refers to as recruits) how to define and also show character and story objectives. When comparing fiction writing to a battle plan, Stone says, "Objectives play [...] an important role in fiction; without them, there would be no story."

Exercises found in this book challenge recruits to be better writers. Stone's stated purpose in writing this how-to manual is for his readers to produce a quality first draft. His book lets writers start from scratch, takes them through development and marches them into the drafting phase. He breaks down each drill into smaller steps, such as his five steps to establish character relationships. In this process he demonstrates how to start conflict keep it going and how to end it.

Military drill sergeants tell trainees to forget what they knew before they came into the service, and Stone does the same. Reading this book changes a writer. If you lean toward procrastination, you'll find no mercy here. Goal-oriented elements thread throughout these exercises. Drills require commitment and offer the mental discipline needed to complete a novel. His no excuse stance also addresses learning how to schedule deadlines to fit life's other responsibilities.

Once the writer completes a draft, Stone's exercises show how to cut, rework and improve for a finished manuscript. If you're ready to make writing a novel a reality in your life, it's time to sign up for Novelist's Boot Camp.

The Game That Teaches Average People How to Become Rich - CA$HFLOW

Did you know there is a game that actually educates people on how to become rich? It is called "CA$HFLOW."

CA$HFLOW is the brain child of Robert Kiyosaki, a top authority on Finance and Personal Development, having sold 28 million copies of 15 books World wide.

Kiyosaki's famous book "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" has been on the New York Times best seller list for 8 straight years, teaching people how to become financially free by adopting the principles taught to him by his rich dad, while abandoning those taught by his highly educated, tremendously respected, yet ultimately non-rich dad.

CA$HFLOW is to Monopoly what 3D chess is to checkers. The game challenges the players' decision making processes and educates them on valuable cash growth strategies which, applied properly, provide a low-risk road map to wealth.

"CA$HFLOW" can help ANYONE make money beyond their wildest imagination by adapting the principles Mr. Kiyosaki has been teaching throughout his career. Fully understanding, absorbing and applying Kiyosaki's teachings within CA$HFLOW can lead ANYONE down the path toward financial freedom in real life.

CA$HFLOW is actually a game within a game. The object of the game is to get out of the "rat race" and on to the "fast track."

The "rat race" represents the gerbil wheel of life - what 95% of people are doing day after day, year after year to create income.

We are taught this plan: go to school, get a high paying job with a nice retirement plan, save your money.

There are several problems with this strategy. The dollar is designed to go down in value year after year. Saving it does not make much sense. Why work to earn a dollar, then put it in the bank so you will have 94 cents next year, and 88 cents in two years?

Kiyosaki teaches people to simply view money as a tool to make more money. If you can put your money to work for you, instead of just saving it, you can build true wealth over time.

Wealth, according to Kiyosaki, is not measured in money, but in time. In the rat race, people spend all of their time pursuing money. On the fast track, money creates time, which allows one freedom to pursue their dreams.

Every day, rat racers go to work to make other people rich. Then they retire, IF they make it that far.

The problem with the rat race is the you can not get rich if you are in it. If you are relying on one or two streams of income, (mainly your job) then you are destined to financial mediocrity. JOB = Just over broke.

CA$HFLOW teaches people how to create real assets for themselves.

The income a player collects from several sources turn after turn, (day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year) is derived through four primary sources: real estate investment, stock investment, personal development and network marketing.

Through creation of these real assets, players develop multiple, predictable, passive residual income streams. Eventually, these passive residual income streams develop into a river of money-flowing assets, and one advances out of the rat race and on to the fast track.

The first player to achieve this goal will have a very high probability of winning the game. This is typically the first player to accumulate the Spare Time Cards 1, 2 and 3: the "Direct 2 You" (D2Y) direct selling Opportunity.

Kiyosaki is a huge proponent of direct selling, aka network marketing, which he champions as one of the best ways to build genuine wealth creation.

If a strong network marketing business is built, then wealth becomes "infinite" because the money continues to flow in week after week, month after month, even passing from generation to generation.

The more CA$HFLOW is played, the more strategies a player can extrapolate from the game and apply in their own life.

Anyone who becomes an expert at CA$HFLOW will become skilled at asset creation, which will lead to real world creation of multiple, predictable income streams.

Whether you are serious about learning how to make money and create wealth, or just like having fun with the family and teaching your children strong financial skill building, you will love CA$HFLOW.

Jesus, Interrupted Revealing the Hidden Contradictions in the Bible by Bart Ehrman 2/4

Jesus, Interrupted: Revealing the Hidden Contradictions in the Bible (And Why We Don't Know About Them) "Picking up where Bible expert Bart Ehrman's New York Times bestseller Misquoting Jesus left off, Jesus, Interrupted addresses the larger issue of what the New Testament actually teaches—and it's not what most people think. Here Ehrman reveals what scholars have unearthed: The authors of the New Testament have diverging views about who Jesus was and how salvation works The New Testament contains books that were forged in the names of the apostles by Christian writers who lived decades later Jesus, Paul, Matthew, and John all represented fundamentally different religions Established Christian doctrines—such as the suffering messiah, the divinity of Jesus, and the trinity—were the inventions of still later theologians These are not idiosyncratic perspectives of just one modern scholar. As Ehrman skillfully demonstrates, they have been the standard and widespread views of critical scholars across a full spectrum of denominations and traditions. Why is it most people have never heard such things? This is the book that pastors, educators, and anyone interested in the Bible have been waiting for—a clear and compelling account of the central challenges we face when attempting to reconstruct the life and message of Jesus." About the Author Bart D. Ehrman is the author of more than twenty books, including the New York Times bestselling Misquoting Jesus and God's Problem. Ehrman ...

The New Atheism-Victor Stenger (II)

In recent years a number of bestselling books have forcefully argued that belief in God can no longer be defended on rational or empirical grounds, and that the scientific worldview has rendered obsolete the traditional beliefs held by Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. The authors of these books-Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens, and Victor J. Stenger-have come to be known as the "New Atheists." Predictably, their works have been controversial and attracted a good deal of critical reaction. In this new book, Victor J. Stenger, whose God: The Failed Hypothesis was on the New York Times bestseller list in 2007, reviews and expands upon the principles of New Atheism and answers many of its critics. He demonstrates in detail that naturalism-the view that all of reality is reducible to matter and nothing else-is sufficient to explain everything we observe in the universe, from the most distant galaxies to the inner workings of the brain that result in the phenomenon of mind. Stenger disputes the claim of many critics that the question of whether God exists is beyond the ken of science. On the contrary, he argues that absence of evidence for God is, indeed, evidence of absence when the evidence should be there and is not. Turning from scientific to historical evidence, Stenger then points out the many examples of evil perpetrated in the name of religion. Book Sales - Why Moving More Books is Setting Your Sights Too Low

Every writer on earth dreams of seeing his books fly out of bookstores on golden wings, leaving a trail of golden coins behind them. While it's true that selling lots of books has its merits, the dividends on maximum sales isn't usually of the golden coin variety.

What are the actual benefits of book sales?

o To circulate the author's name

o To give the author credibility as an expert

o To gain the attention of news media

o To provide a platform for receiving large honorariums

o To develop a basis for consulting services

Did you notice that making millions of dollars is not included in the above list? Here are some reasons royalties are absent:

1. Royalties are short lived. The average book's shelf life is a month or less. If your new release sits in inventory with little action for 2 weeks, the bookstore owner will pull it out to make way for other new titles. They hustle those unbought volumes into shipping boxes and start them on their way to the distributor to be sure they'll arrive within the 30 day no-penalty limit.

2. Royalties are such a small percentage of the profit on a book, usually between 50 cents and a dollar per volume. When you consider that most books sell less than 5,000 copies, it's no wonder that the vast majority of authors never see a dime above their advance checks.

Whenever I talk to authors about their financial straits, they immediately begin to talk about more publicity and more book sales. But why continue in a vein that only brings you a buck a book when there are so many other ways to create income by focusing on the information within the pages rather than the paper and ink? Why center all your resources on what isn't working instead of reaching out for the real power behind the words?

Teaching the material in the book will reach more people with more depth and impact than the book itself will ever do. Teaching the material in the book will bring in multiplied income like royalties will never do. Think of electronic delivery items: reports ($7-97), ebooks ($17-297), and ecourses ($97-250), all delivered automatically with instant payment. Then move to more personal training: seminars, live events, mentoring, coaching, consulting services.

Sound out of your range? Widen your mindset. If you have enough knowledge and experience to write that book, you are more than equipped for all of the above. You can begin building your information empire today.
