How to Market Your Book and Reach Best Seller Status

Most writers believe that the only way to become a well-known author is to be a guest on national TV. In fact, the dream of most writers is to secure a spot on Oprah then ride the wave to the top of the New York Times best-seller list. It's not always possible, or even practical, to think that everyone can be on a top-rated show, but there are other ways to become popular in your field.

Not Everyone Can Write Oprah-type Books

Although it's true that just about every book featured on Oprah's show has skyrocketed to the best-seller list, it's not the only way to sell books. Take a look at the type of books she usually focuses on. Is that the type of book you've written?

If not, next time you do decide to write a book and if it's your life's dream to see your tome featured on Ms. Winfrey's show, plan accordingly. Ask yourself what type of book would Oprah read, what would catch her attention and win her over?

Most authors probably realize that they honestly can't write a book that Oprah would like or even read. Rest assured that she isn't the only way to the best seller list.

The Media is the Best Way to Advertise Your Book

Start focusing on quantity then work your way up to quality. Get onto every radio show or website you can that will interview you or do a review. Jack Canfield, author of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, made it a goal to do at least one radio or TV interview per day.

You can do this too. Get online, surf the Internet and type in keywords related to your book. Check out the sites that come up and see if they're a good fit for you and your book. If so, contact them and ask if they'd like to do an interview, book review, or offer to do a guest post.

Don't forget to check out blogs and Internet radio shows on sites such as Blog Talk Radio.

Be Tireless In Your Pursuit of Publicity

Keep active, keep your name and the title of your book fresh in the minds of the public. Offer to speak at libraries, community centers, churches, or any other place you can think of that would be open to your expertise. You can also teach classes or workshops, selling your book afterward. This is the way to slowly but surely sell more books and potentially reach best seller status.

Remember that the success of your book promotion depends on you. It's the sum total of your passion, energy, creativity, and never-give-up attitude. Don't be afraid to try new ways of marketing and promoting your book.
