Review - The Octopus Conspiracy and Other Vignettes of the Counterculture

The Octopus Conspiracy and Other Vignettes of the Counterculture, Steven Hager, 2005, ISBN 0975290614

This book, based on articles published in High Times magazine, covers many different aspects of what is known as the counterculture.

There is a piece about the assassination of John F. Kennedy which does a good job of destroying the Warren Commission findings (as if more destruction is needed). There is a chapter on secret societies and their huge influence in America, including Skull and Bones and the Freemasons.

For anyone who wants to know What Really Happened at Waco in 1993 and just who David Koresh really was, there is a piece in this book that does an excellent job at it.

Being High Times magazine, there is a visit to a young man in the Netherlands who has become something of a marijuana entrepreneur, shipping high quality pot seeds all over the world. There is also a visit to the annual Cannabis Cup competition, held in Amsterdam. Think of it as the Marijuana World Championship.

The most interesting parts of this book look at the history of graffiti in 1970s and 1980s New York City. It started with young people writing their name or tag nearly anywhere, then evolved into an art form that attracted big attention from the mainstream art world. The reader will also read about the birth of rap music, when the DJ was king, spinning records in tiny clubs and basements. Later, the MCs, who were to keep the crowd moving, started rhyming, and eventually took over the show. The book also looks at the birth of CBGB's, the iconic rock club in the East Village. Punk rock of the 1970s gave birth to glitter rock, new wave and all sorts of offshoots. All the important people in 1970s and 1980s New York City are here, including Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Africa Bambaataa, Talking Heads, the Sugarhill Gang and the B-52s. The stories are told mostly from the point of view of the everyday New Yorkers who were part of these scenes.

No matter what your counterculture interest is, music, art or drugs, it is in this excellent group of articles. I learned a lot from this book, and even veterans will, too.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (G.K. Hall Large Print Perennial Bestseller Collection) Specifications

Mark Twain's classic novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, tells the story of a teenaged misfit who finds himself floating on a raft down the Mississippi River with an escaping slave, Jim. In the course of their perilous journey, Huck and Jim meet adventure, danger, and a cast of characters who are sometimes menacing and often hilarious.

Though some of the situations in Huckleberry Finn are funny in themselves (the cockeyed Shakespeare production in Chapter 21 leaps instantly to mind), this book's humor is found mostly in Huck's unique worldview and his way of expressing himself. Describing his brief sojourn with the Widow Douglas after she adopts him, Huck says: "After supper she got out her book and learned me about Moses and the Bulrushers, and I was in a sweat to find out all about him; but by and by she let it out that Moses had been dead a considerable long time; so then I didn't care no more about him, because I don't take no stock in dead people." Underlying Twain's good humor is a dark subcurrent of Antebellum cruelty and injustice that makes The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn a frequently funny book with a serious message.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (G.K. Hall Large Print Perennial Bestseller Collection) CustomerReview

Huckleberry Finn is one of those classic books that you just can't put down. It is a very good book that is suspenseful and really draws you in. It starts off with Huck imprisoned in civilization surrounded with good manners and sophistication. Daily he goofs off with his pals Tom Sawyer and others, imagining up scenarios where there is plenty of action and fun to be had. When his father returns, Huck has to stay with him but soon escapes, faking his own death and running away to a local island to live on his own. There, he meets Jim, Miss Watson's slave who he thought was going to sell him, so he ran off. Soon after, Huck and Jim start traveling down the river as many men were out looking for Jim. They travel only on nights, surviving on fish that they catch and other vegetables that they manage to scavenge. Unfortunatly, they run into two men, duke and king as they are known, who both claim to be royalty. They end up being a nuisance, as they demand everything be done for them. Soon afterward, they arrive at a small town where a respected man has just died. Everything in his will is pledged to his two brothers, who have not arrived. Duke and King pose as the real brothers, as they are hoping to rob the family of their money. When the real brothers arrive, Huck and Jim try to evade the con men, but as they make their escape they are caught by Duke and King. They travel futher down the river, and stop at yet another town, to resupply and hopfully make some money. When Huck, Duke, and King return to the raft, they find Jim missing, apparently captured as a runaway slave. Huck goes off to try to recapture Jim, and he poses as Tom Sawyer when he stays at Tom's Aunt Polly's house. Coincidentally, Tom arrives, and joins the cause to save Jim. Tom, as he has to throw some finesse into the escape plan, makes it much longer than it intended to be, even thought it would have been quite easy to escape in the first place. after weeks, The boys and Jim make their escape, but a few days after, Jim is captured in a town a few miles below the escape point. As Jim faces death, Tom steps in and says that Jim was already free, and that Miss Watson had freed him in her will, as she had died a week or so earlier. With Jim free, Tom returns to his original town and Huck get adopted to be civilized by Tom's Aunt Polly.

Beyond Reason by AK Dewdney

The book under review titled Beyond Reason - 8 great problems that reveal the limits of science by A.K. Dewdney is an excellent book.

The author was the member of the computer science department at the university of Western Ontario and at the university of Waterloo for a combined period of thirty years before retiring!

His research in unknowable particles, unpredictable systems, unprovable theorems, impossible programs and intractable problems reflects in this well written book.

In eight chapters the scientist's mind explores the following eight great problems that limits the science:

1. It is not possible to build a machine that runs forever with no source of energy, yet produces usable energy.
2. It is not possible for matter or energy to travel faster than the speed of light in a vaccum.
3. The detailed behaviour of any quantum system, whether it consists of electrons, photons or atomic particles cannot be predicted by any mathematical law or computer program.
4. There are some classical systems (such as the weather or planetary motions) the long term behaviour of which can not be predicted by any mathematical law (or computer)
5. It is not possible using only rule and compass, to construct a square equal in area to that of a given circle.
6. There are some theorems (true mathematical statements) that we will never be able to prove.
7. There are some yes/no questions, perfectly well defined, that no computer no matter how fast or powerful can answer.
8. There are some mathematical problems that computers can solve only by taking an exponential amount of time.

In the first chapter Dewdney deals with the impossible perpetual motion.

He quotes a very rare Sanskrit book on astronomy, Siddhanta Chudamani, which describes a self-turning wheel. One of the slokas describe a self turning wheel. It states that if the wheel was properly supported, it would run for ever!

Nobody has tried to construct this wheel, so far! The other chapters deal with the other problems in detail.

Each chapter of the book explains in detail the mathematics involved in these eight problems which limits the science.
A list of reference books along with an index is very useful for the readers.

I strongly recommend this book for the people who are interested in Science and Religion. 224 pages of fun!

Dewdney's other books, A Mathematical Mystery Tour, The Planiverse, Yes, We have no neutrons, 200% of nothing were all well received by the scholars.

Killing Game (CSI) Overviews

The machinations of a new supervisor may have altered Gil Grissom's team of skillful CSIs, as Catherine Willows, Nick Stokes, and Warrick Brown are reassigned from the graveyard shift to the swing shift. That doesn't mean, however, that their paths will never cross. During the course of their separate investigations, the teams must unite again to investigate two distinct murders -- atrocities that are oddly aligned as they share much of the same collective evidence. Despite the different M.O.s, the CSIs are uncovering two wildly imperfect crimes that could possibly add up to an almost perfect one...

Killing Game (CSI) CustomerReview

I have been a fan of CSI for about three years now and got into reading the books by Max Allan Collins in December of last year. The books follow the timeline of the television show but are understandably behind what is happening there. For instance, Killing Game is set in the time when Grissom's team had been broken up by Ecklie and Grissom was still head of the graveyard shift and had Sara, Greg and Sophia reporting to him and Catherine had become head of the swing shift and had Warrick and Nick reporting to her.

I found Killing Game to be very compelling and will just say that if you are a fan of the show, you will enjoy the read.
