Quest for Lost Heroes (Drenai Tales, Book 3) Overviews

The Drenai stronghold had fallen. Now blood-hungry Nadir hordes spread desolation and despair across all the lands...
...even tiny Gothir, where slavers seized a young girl while the villagers looked the other way--all but the peasant boy Kiall. His unlikely rescue attempt would lead across the savage steppes and on through the Halls of Hell. The youth would face ferocious beasts, deadly warriors, and demons of the dark; he would emerge a man--or not emerge at all.
But Kiall would not face these dangers alone. Heroes out of legend joined his quest: Chareos the Blademaster, Beltzer the Axeman, and the bowmen Finn and Maggrig. And one among their company hid a secret that could free the world of Nadir domination. That one was the Nadir Bane, the hope of the Drenai. That one was the Earl of Bronze.
Thus did a search for a stolen slave girl become a quest that would shake the very world.

Quest for Lost Heroes (Drenai Tales, Book 3) CustomerReview

The Drenai Tales are well written books that feature heroes that are battle hardened men haunted by the horrors of war, rather than idealistic heroes shrouded in glory. There is some magic in the world that appears in the form of telepathy, manipulation of the elements, and battles of will. Gemmell digs deep into the psyches of his characters and delivers a gritty tale full of action and consequences.

The Drenai Tales.
The first two books dealt with a small force trying to defend a keep against a much larger, more powerful force. Quest for Lost Heroes breaks the mold and follows a small party of warriors on an adventure.

Quest for Lost Heroes is set in desperate times with Nadir Raiders, famine, and corrupt monarchs ravaging the land. A young hunter named Kiall sets off against Nadir Raiders after they kidnap woman he loves. On his hopeless quest he meets up with four war heroes that agree to help him. Hunted by two armies, they fight their way through frozen mountains, perilous jungles, and the Nadir plains.

The focus of this book is on the characters themselves as they deal with hopeless situations and battle their own inner demons. The seemingly insignificant quest to rescue a poor farm girl unfolds to have a much larger impact on the world.

Read this book if you want a dark and gritty story about warriors on an epic adventure. There is enough history explained in this book, where you can enjoy it without reading the first two books.

Avoid this one if you want a happy book with mystical faries and unicorns.
